Machinery extension
Boat insurance term, area: Hull
Hull wordings almost always exclude mechanical breakdown: wear, a seized bearing, a short circuit, a material fault in the part that actually failed. The engine that dies on a flat calm day is therefore the classic uninsured loss, and a gearbox rebuild is never cheap. A machinery extension buys that exclusion back for the main engine, the gearbox, the shaft, the propeller and the auxiliary sets. Clauses of this kind normally carry an age limit for the machinery and a documented maintenance condition.
What to check: Does the wording exclude mechanical breakdown, and is a machinery extension actually named in the schedule? What age limit applies to the machinery, which service records will be asked for after a claim, and does the extension answer for operating error and a broken shaft?
