Tracking device

Boat insurance term, area: Owner duties

A tracking device is a small transmitter fitted on board that reports the boat's position over the mobile network or by satellite. After a theft it is often the only reason a boat comes back: the trailer is pulled off the slipway overnight, by morning the app shows it in a yard two hundred kilometres away, and the police drive out. The unit cuts both ways. Declaring a tracker often improves the terms on offer, but it also creates a duty, because many wordings treat the installation as a disclosed material circumstance and want proof after a claim that the device was fitted and switched on.

What to check: Two questions for your own contract: does the wording ask you to declare a tracking device, and does it want proof that the device was fitted and working? And is a reduction of the settlement stated for the case that this proof cannot be produced?
