Yes, you can insure your voice, but a dedicated voice policy only exists as a one-off contract on the specialist market, usually in London, when a high income depends on it. In Germany, singers and speakers mostly use occupational disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung). A EUR 1,000 monthly pension costs about EUR 46 to 193 a month for creative jobs at 29.
Monthly premiums for an occupational disability pension in creative jobs and for an optional sick pay tariff in Germany, 2026.
Example
Typical range
Disability cover, age 29, music teacher, EUR 1,000 pension to 67
about EUR 54 to 163 a month
Disability cover, age 29, writer, EUR 1,000 pension to 67
about EUR 46 to 193 a month
Disability cover, age 29, art photographer, EUR 1,000 pension to 67
about EUR 80 to 188 a month
Optional sick pay tariff for artists, weeks 3 to 6, up to EUR 20 a day
EUR 5.85 a month
Premiums from published comparisons as of June 2026 and from a health insurer's tariff sheet.
The sources give no separate premiums for singers or speakers; acceptance is decided case by case.
The worked example is a guide value from quoting practice.
Worked example
Voice actor, 29, insured through the KSK
How she can cover the loss of her voice if an insurer accepts her for disability cover.
Disability pension EUR 1,000 to age 67
about EUR 46 to 193 a month
Optional sick pay from week 3
EUR 5.85 a month
Statutory sick pay
from week 7 through the health insurer
Together about EUR 52 to 199 a month. Sick pay covers short losses of the voice, the pension a permanent one.
What a real voice policy is
Stories about insured voices of stars almost always lead to the London insurance market. There, a contract is negotiated for one person: it defines what counts as loss of the voice and how much is then paid.
These contracts need a provable income that depends on the voice. Premiums and terms are not published, and insurers usually do not confirm press reports about individual voices. For a choir singer or a podcaster in Germany, this route is hardly open.
Disability cover: the realistic way to protect your voice income
If you earn your living with your voice, insure the income. Occupational disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung, BU) pays a monthly pension if health reasons stop you from working in your job, whether vocal cord disease or an accident is the cause.
Insurers often refuse a standard BU for singers. Since March 2024 a tariff for artistic professions exists, which also covers mental illness. Check whether the insurer may refer you to another job (abstrakte Verweisung); for voice actors with side jobs in media this matters a lot.

Basic abilities cover only with speaking listed
Basic abilities insurance (Grundfähigkeitsversicherung) pays when a defined ability is lost, such as seeing, hearing, gripping or walking. Speaking is not part of every tariff, and losing your singing voice is not the same as losing speech.
So for singers, a pure loss of voice is not necessarily covered. It can be a fallback if a BU was refused, but only after checking the list of abilities closely.
Hoarse for weeks: sick pay for your voice
Often the voice is not lost for good but for a few weeks. Self-employed artists insured through the Artists' Social Insurance Fund (Künstlersozialkasse, KSK) receive statutory sick pay only from the seventh week of incapacity.
Health insurers offer optional tariffs for the weeks before. One fund pays from week three to the end of week six up to EUR 20 a day, for EUR 5.85 a month with a three year commitment.
When you need nothing extra for your voice
If your income does not depend on your voice, you do not need voice cover. A BU for your actual job already protects you if a larynx condition stops you from working.
Private accident insurance (Unfallversicherung) does not replace voice cover either: it only pays after accidents, while most voice problems come from strain or illness.
Step by step
Work out which share of your income depends on your voice.
Ask for a BU quote with your exact job title, and if refused, check the tariff for artistic professions.
With basic abilities cover, check that speaking is explicitly insured.
Close the sick pay gap until week seven with an optional tariff or daily sickness benefit.
Have quotes compared; Norman Nammert acts as an insurance broker (Versicherungsmakler), the commission is paid by the insurer.
