In short
For a young small dog, full cover (Vollschutz) usually costs EUR 11 to 18 a month, for a young large dog EUR 20 to 35. Surgery-only cover (OP-Schutz) starts at around EUR 4 to 12 a month. From age eight insurers add 30 to 80 percent, and many will not take a new dog at all. Age at sign up is the strongest price lever.
Premium ranges and treatment costs from published German tariff overviews, tests and price lists, as of September 2026.
| Example | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Young small dog, full cover | about EUR 11 to 18 a month, roughly EUR 130 to 220 a year |
| Young large dog, full cover | about EUR 20 to 35 a month, roughly EUR 240 to 420 a year |
| Dog aged eight or over, full cover | about EUR 50 to 80 a month, roughly EUR 600 to 960 a year |
| Surgery-only cover, young dog | about EUR 4 to 12 a month, roughly EUR 50 to 145 a year |
| Surgery-only cover with good benefits | about EUR 160 to 550 a year |
| Cruciate ligament tear with diagnostics, surgery and aftercare | about EUR 2,500 to 4,500 |
| Foreign body in stomach or intestine, surgery | about EUR 1,500 to 3,500 |
| Dental treatment with anaesthetic, X-rays and extractions | about EUR 300 to 2,000 |
| Caesarean section | about EUR 1,300 to 2,600 |
| Usual reimbursement rates and deductibles | 80 to 100 percent reimbursement, deductible of EUR 0, 150, 250 or 500 or 20 to 30 percent |
Guide values as of September 2026 from published tariff overviews, tests and cost lists. Premiums for dogs aged eight or over are guide values from our quoting practice, because hardly any tariffs are published for that age group. Your premium depends on age, breed, cover and deductible; we obtain the exact quote for you.
Worked example
Eight years of premiums set against one cruciate ligament operation with aftercare.
| Full cover premium | EUR 28 a month |
| Premiums paid over eight years | EUR 2,688 |
| Bill for cruciate ligament tear with diagnostics, surgery and aftercare | about EUR 3,500 |
| Deductible in the claim year | EUR 150 |
| Reimbursement of 90 percent on EUR 3,350 | EUR 3,015 |
In this course of events the policy pays back EUR 327 more than it cost in eight years. If the dog stays healthy, you paid EUR 2,688 and got nothing back. That, and not the monthly figure, is the actual decision.
The biggest single factor is how old your dog is when the policy starts. A puppy or a two-year-old dog stays cheaper for life, because the insurer bases the rate band on the age at entry. Sign up at eight and published tariff overviews put you 30 to 80 percent higher, and many insurers will not accept the dog at all.
Breed and size come next. A Labrador or Golden Retriever costs roughly twice as much in full cover as a small dog, because large animals need more anaesthetic, more implant material and more joint surgery. Flat-faced breeds sit higher still because of their airways.
| Price driver | Effect on the premium |
|---|---|
| Age at sign up | very strong, from age eight a surcharge of 30 to 80 percent |
| Breed and size | strong, large breeds roughly double a small dog |
| Full cover instead of surgery-only | strong, often two to three times as much |
| Reimbursement of 80 instead of 100 percent | lowers the premium, raises your share of every bill |
| Deductible of EUR 150 to 500 | lowers the premium by about 20 to 40 percent |
| Annual limit | a low limit makes the tariff cheap and thin when it matters |
| Reimbursement up to the fourfold GOT rate | costs more, but covers emergency service and complex cases |
| Waiting period | not a price question, but 30 days to 6 months without benefits |
The ranges below summarise published German tariff overviews and tests for healthy dogs with no pre-existing conditions. They assume a reimbursement rate of 80 to 100 percent and a deductible of no more than EUR 150.
The yearly figure matters more than the monthly one. Full cover for a large dog costs more over eight years, with no premium increase at all, than a single cruciate ligament operation would pay back.
| Profile | Premium per month | Premium per year |
|---|---|---|
| Young small dog, full cover | about EUR 11 to 18 | about EUR 130 to 220 |
| Young large dog, full cover | about EUR 20 to 35 | about EUR 240 to 420 |
| Dog aged eight or over, full cover | about EUR 50 to 80 | about EUR 600 to 960 |
| Surgery-only cover, young dog | about EUR 4 to 12 | about EUR 50 to 145 |
| Surgery-only cover with good benefits | about EUR 13 to 46 | about EUR 160 to 550 |
German vets bill according to an official fee schedule, the Gebührenordnung für Tierärzte (GOT). A general examination with advice costs EUR 23.62 net at the single rate. In normal hours a vet may charge the single to threefold rate, in emergency service the twofold to fourfold rate plus an emergency fee.
So it is not only the reimbursement percentage that counts, but also how high a GOT multiple your tariff pays. A contract that reimburses only up to the twofold rate leaves you with a large share of every weekend emergency. On top of that come the annual limit (Jahreshöchstgrenze) and the deductible (Selbstbeteiligung): both lower your premium and raise your own share.
Almost all tariffs are banded by age, so the premium you see at sign up is not the premium you pay in the dog's tenth year. Expect it to at least double over a dog's life, because vet fees themselves keep rising as well.
Switching late in life rarely helps. A new insurer rates you at the age you have reached and excludes everything already treated. Signing up early and staying put is cheaper across the whole of a dog's life.
Published evaluations are clear: 77 percent of dog owners spend up to EUR 500 a year at the vet, only 8 percent spend more than EUR 1,000, and only 14 percent report that their dog ever needed surgery in its whole life. With a small, healthy dog and EUR 3,000 to 4,000 set aside, carrying the risk yourself is usually cheaper.
A tariff that only looks cheap is not worth it either. If a deductible of EUR 500 meets an annual limit of EUR 2,000, a bill of EUR 3,500 leaves about half with you, even though you paid premiums for years. Read the limit and the deductible together, never one on its own.
Questions and answers
For a young small dog about EUR 11 to 18 in full cover, for a young large dog about EUR 20 to 35. Surgery-only cover starts at around EUR 4 to 12.
A deductible of EUR 150 to 500 lowers the premium by about 20 to 40 percent. Check first that you could pay that amount immediately when a claim happens.
The Gebührenordnung für Tierärzte is the official German fee schedule for vets. In normal hours the single to threefold rate applies, in emergency service the twofold to fourfold rate plus an emergency fee.
Often not. If you keep EUR 3,000 to 4,000 set aside for the dog, carrying the risk yourself is usually cheaper, because most dogs never need surgery.
You can switch, but the new insurer rates you at the age reached and excludes illnesses already treated. Switching usually only pays in the first few years.
