Which travel insurance do I need if I live in Germany?

In short
A policy for one trip usually costs 3 to 8 percent of the trip price, so EUR 90 to 240 for a trip worth EUR 3,000. An annual policy (Jahresvertrag) for one person costs about EUR 29 to 200 depending on the trip value you insure, and about EUR 55 to 215 for a family. From two trips a year the annual policy is almost always cheaper.
Published tariff examples and ranges for Germany, as of 2026.
| Example | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Policy for one trip, share of the trip price | usually 3 to 8 percent |
| Trip worth EUR 3,000, 14 days, comprehensive cover per person | about EUR 80 to 150 |
| Annual policy, one person, trip value up to EUR 3,000 | about EUR 100 to 140 a year |
| Annual policy, family, trip value up to EUR 3,000 | about EUR 102 to 149 a year |
| Annual policy, one person, trip value up to EUR 1,000, with a 20 percent deductible | about EUR 41 a year |
| Annual policy, family, trip value up to EUR 3,000, with a 20 percent deductible | about EUR 123 a year |
| Annual policy, travellers aged 65 and over, trip value up to EUR 3,000 | about EUR 156 to 239 a year |
Guide values as of September 2026 from publicly quoted tariff examples. The euro amounts for a single trip in the table are calculated from the documented percentage of the trip price and are therefore a guide value from quoting practice, as is the comparison between plain cancellation cover and a package. Your premium depends on trip price, age and scope; we obtain the exact quote for you.
Worked example
The family books in January for the summer and wants to know whether a policy for this trip or an annual policy is cheaper.
| Policy for this trip, around 5 percent of the trip price | about EUR 150 |
| Annual family policy up to EUR 3,000, no deductible | about EUR 102 to 149 |
| Annual family policy up to EUR 3,000, 20 percent deductible | about EUR 123 |
| Second trip in autumn worth EUR 1,500, own policy | about EUR 75 |
For one trip the two options are almost level. Add the second trip and two single-trip policies cost about EUR 225, while the annual policy stays at about EUR 102 to 149. Here the annual policy pays off from the second trip on. Worked example with guide values.
The trip price matters most. A policy for a single trip (Einmalpolice) is priced as a share of what the trip costs, usually 3 to 8 percent. With an annual policy you pick an upper limit per trip and pay one fixed premium for every trip in the year.
Then come age, the number of people, the deductible (Selbstbeteiligung) and the scope. Older travellers pay noticeably more because the risk of a sudden illness rises. Long-haul and long trips carry a surcharge, while children usually cost nothing extra in a family tariff (Familientarif).
| Factor | Effect on the premium |
|---|---|
| Trip price | direct, a single-trip policy costs about 3 to 8 percent of it |
| Age of travellers | from 65 often one and a half to two times as much |
| Number of people | a family tariff caps the premium, children often free |
| Deductible of 20 percent | about 15 to 25 percent off the premium |
| Single trip or annual policy | from two trips a year the annual policy wins |
| Destination and length | long-haul and multi-week trips carry a surcharge |
The table puts the usual 3 to 8 percent range next to published annual premiums, so you can see where the line between the two options sits.
The figures apply to travellers under 65 and to tariffs without a deductible. With a 20 percent deductible the premium is about 15 to 25 percent lower.
| Insured trip value | Policy for one trip | Annual policy, one person | Annual policy, family |
|---|---|---|---|
| up to EUR 1,000 | about EUR 30 to 80 | about EUR 29 to 67 | about EUR 55 to 108 |
| up to EUR 2,000 | about EUR 60 to 160 | about EUR 59 to 100 | about EUR 79 to 208 |
| up to EUR 3,000 | about EUR 90 to 240 | about EUR 100 to 140 | about EUR 102 to 149 |
| up to EUR 5,000 | about EUR 150 to 400 | about EUR 141 to 200 | about EUR 155 to 215 |
For exactly one trip a year both options cost roughly the same. For a trip worth EUR 3,000 published examples show about EUR 105 for a single-trip policy and about EUR 95 for an annual policy for one person, and about EUR 105 either way in a family tariff.
The difference shows up on the second trip: the single-trip policy is due again, the annual one is not. Just make sure no trip costs more than the upper limit you chose, otherwise the insurer only pays up to that amount.
On a cheap trip the premium is out of proportion. For a EUR 400 trip you pay about EUR 12 to 32 while the cancellation fee itself stays small. If you could pay that fee out of your own pocket, you do not need the policy.
The same is true for bookings you can cancel free of charge, which many hotels and flexible flight fares allow until shortly before arrival. And a 20 percent deductible can eat most of a small claim, because many tariffs also subtract a minimum amount of around EUR 25.
Plain cancellation cover pays the cancellation fee if you have to call the trip off before it starts. Packages add travel health insurance (Auslandskrankenversicherung), trip interruption (Reiseabbruch) and baggage. As an annual policy for one person, plain cancellation starts at about EUR 46 and the package at about EUR 77.
Whether the package makes sense depends on what you already have. Some credit cards include travel health cover, and German contents insurance (Hausratversicherung) sometimes covers baggage. Paying twice buys nothing, because only one insurer pays in a claim.
Questions and answers
Usually 3 to 8 percent. On a trip worth EUR 2,000 that is about EUR 60 to 160, depending on age and deductible.
Usually from two trips a year. For a trip value up to EUR 3,000 an annual policy for one person costs about EUR 100 to 140 and covers every trip that year.
Tariffs with a 20 percent deductible cost about 15 to 25 percent less. In a claim you pay 20 percent of the cancellation fee yourself, often with a minimum of around EUR 25.
Because the risk of a sudden illness is higher. From 65 an annual policy for a trip value up to EUR 3,000 often costs about EUR 156 to 239 instead of EUR 100 to 140.
Almost always. It caps the premium and children usually travel at no extra cost. For a trip value up to EUR 3,000 it is about EUR 102 to 149 a year.
As an annual policy for one person, plain cancellation cover starts at about EUR 46 and the package at about EUR 77. Check first what your credit card and contents insurance already cover.
