Is there travel health insurance with no age limit?

In short

Yes, there is travel health insurance with no age limit. According to the German consumer test, even 88-year-olds can sign up with several insurers. It gets more expensive from about 65 to 70: an annual policy costs a 70-year-old just under EUR 21, and in one tariff a 77-year-old pays about EUR 80 for five weeks in Canada.

Worked example

Couple aged 72 and 78, two trips a year

They travel to Italy in spring and to Madeira for three weeks in autumn. Both have well controlled high blood pressure.

Partner tariff with no age limitavailable
Surcharges from 66 and 76per person
Annual premium for bothabout EUR 90 to 160
High blood pressurecovered if stable and not newly treated

The couple gets cover with no age limit but pays clearly more than younger travellers. The rule on pre-existing conditions matters more than the price. Guide values from our quoting practice.

Age limit and age band are different

An age limit means a tariff will not accept you beyond a certain age. An age band means you are accepted but pay more. Travel health insurance with no age limit almost always has age bands.

The base premium often applies up to 65 or 70. After that it rises, in one tariff from 66 and again from 76. In a family tariff only the older person pays the surcharge.

AgeWhat to expect
up to 65base premium, annual policy from about EUR 8
66 to 75surcharge, annual policy often around EUR 20 to 50
76 and overfurther surcharge, some tariffs around EUR 80
80 and overless choice, look for tariffs with no age limit

If no insurer will take you

If you provably cannot get private cover because of your age or a pre-existing condition, your statutory health fund (gesetzliche Krankenkasse) can pay for urgent treatment outside the EU. It must have confirmed this before you travel.

Cover is limited to six weeks per calendar year and to what the treatment would have cost in Germany. A medical flight home is not included.

Long stays in later life

Annual policies usually cover only the first 56 to 70 days of each trip. If you spend the winter abroad, you need long-stay cover, where age limits are more common and premiums rise faster.

If you plan a winter in Spain or the Canary Islands, look early for long-stay tariffs with no age limit. The later you search, the smaller the choice.

When you do not need a senior tariff

You rarely need a special senior tariff. Many normal annual travel health insurance policies have no age limit, only a surcharge. Compare these first.

If you have private health insurance, check the cover abroad in it. It often applies worldwide for some weeks, but a flight home is often missing.

Step by step

  1. Look for a maximum entry age in the terms.
  2. Compare age bands and surcharges.
  3. Read the rule on pre-existing conditions.
  4. Match the maximum trip length to your plans.
  5. If nobody insures you, contact your health fund before travelling.

Checklist

  • No maximum age for signing up or renewal
  • Flight home when medically advisable
  • Pre-existing conditions not excluded across the board
  • Trip length fits your longest trip
  • Surcharges per age band known

Common mistakes

  • Looking only at the base premium
  • Choosing a tariff that ends at 75
  • Answering health questions vaguely
  • Using a normal annual policy for a winter abroad
