Will insurance pay if I lose my wedding ring in Germany?
In short
Will insurance pay if I lose my wedding ring in Germany? Contents insurance (Hausratversicherung) will not pay for simple loss. It pays only for burglary, robbery or fire, and for jewellery usually up to 20 percent of the sum insured. Loss is covered only by a jewellery policy that names loss (Abhandenkommen) explicitly. A basic theft and robbery policy for a EUR 1,000 ring starts at about EUR 24 a year.

The example without loss and the contents range come from the sources listed.
Worked example
Wedding ring worth EUR 1,500, contents cover EUR 50,000
How the payout differs depending on what happens.
Burglary, ring stolen
contents insurance pays up to EUR 1,500
Ring lost while swimming
contents insurance pays EUR 0
Jewellery cover with loss, 10 percent excess
payout EUR 1,350
Premium for that
about EUR 35 to 55 a year
Only separate jewellery cover pays for a lost ring; whether it is worth it depends on the ring's value.
Why contents insurance will not pay for a lost wedding ring
German contents insurance replaces your wedding ring only if an insured peril takes or destroys it: fire, burglary, robbery, burst pipes or storm. If the ring slips off while you swim in a lake or stays in a glove, none of these applies.
A ring that vanishes from an open dish at home is also a problem. Without signs of a break in, it is not burglary (Einbruchdiebstahl), and simple theft is excluded or capped at small amounts in many German contents policies.

The valuables limit in your contents policy
Jewellery counts as valuables (Wertsachen) in German contents insurance. A separate cap applies, usually around 20 percent of the sum insured. With EUR 50,000 cover that is about EUR 10,000 for jewellery, watches and cash together.
One wedding ring rarely exceeds this. It gets tight when wedding ring, engagement ring and other jewellery are all taken in one burglary. Some policies cut the limit further if jewellery was not kept in a safe.
Jewellery insurance: only the right policy covers loss
Jewellery insurance covers single items at home and away. Cheaper levels often cover only theft and robbery. Loss, called Abhandenkommen in German wording, usually comes only with the top level.
Before you sign, check that the German policy wording names Abhandenkommen or einfacher Verlust. If it only says Diebstahl (theft), it will not pay when your wedding ring disappears in the sea.
When separate cover for a wedding ring is not worth it
If your wedding ring is worth a few hundred euros, the premium for loss cover soon adds up to more than the ring. Then contents insurance for burglary and robbery is usually enough, and you carry the risk of losing it yourself.
Separate ring cover makes sense for expensive stones, valuable heirlooms or if you wear the ring at work and during sport. Norman Nammert arranges suitable policies as an insurance broker; the insurer pays the commission, so the service is free for you.
Step by step
Keep the receipt or valuation of the wedding ring safe.
Look up the valuables limit (Wertsachengrenze) and safe rules in your contents policy.
Decide whether you can carry the loss yourself or want to insure it.
For jewellery insurance, check that loss (Abhandenkommen) is named in the wording.
After theft or robbery, report it to the police straight away and notify the insurer.

Questions and answers
Frequently asked
Is my wedding ring covered if it is stolen on holiday?
For robbery or a break in to your hotel room often yes, through cover away from home,
usually limited to part of the sum insured.
Simple theft on the beach is normally not covered.
What does insurance for just a wedding ring cost?
A basic theft and robbery policy for a EUR 1,000 ring starts at about EUR 24 a year.
With loss cover the premium is higher.
Do I have to register my wedding ring with my contents insurer?
Usually not, it falls under valuables automatically.
If all your jewellery exceeds the valuables limit, raise the sum or insure jewellery separately.
Will insurance replace the engraving?
It pays the replacement cost up to the sum insured.
Whether engraving is included depends on the policy; no insurance pays for sentimental value.
Does my home country policy still apply in Germany?
Usually not once you live here.
German contents insurance is tied to your German address, so check your cover after moving.
