What insurance do retail sales staff in Germany need?
In short
What insurance retail sales staff in Germany need: first cover for your ability to work, as a guide 50 to 100 euros a month for a 1,200 euro disability pension at 30. Add personal liability for 40 to 120 euros a year and employment legal cover or a union. For cash missing from the till you are only liable with fault or a shortfall agreement.
The last figure is a guide value from our quoting practice.
The 60 to 70 percent cap comes from published underwriting guidelines.
Your premium depends on age, health and duties.
Worked example
Sales assistant, 30, part time 30 hours, 2,100 euros gross
After two slipped discs she cannot stand for long or lift stock. She could work in an office.
Sickness benefit
up to 78 weeks after six weeks of continued pay
Reduced earning capacity pension
none, as she can work six hours a day elsewhere
Possible disability pension at 60 percent of gross
up to about 1,260 euros
Private disability cover, 1,200 euros
pays at 50 percent disability or more
Without private cover she must look for new work and accept a loss. With it she receives 1,200 euros a month.
What really puts retail sales staff at risk
Retail sales staff stand for hours, lift boxes, stack shelves and work shifts. Insurers usually rate this higher than pure office work for disability cover, but cheaper than trades.
The risk is less a single accident than wear and tear: if knee or back problems stop you standing and lifting, you lose the job. The state pension only pays if you cannot work six hours a day in any job at all.
Till shortfalls: when retail staff have to pay
If money is missing from the till in the evening, retail sales staff cannot simply be charged. The employer must prove that you caused the shortfall through your fault (section 619a BGB). Then the rules on employee liability apply: none for slight negligence, a share for medium, usually full for gross negligence.
A shortfall agreement (Mankoabrede) in your contract is only valid if you get fair compensation for it, such as a monthly shortfall allowance. Your liability is then capped at that amount. Insurance against till differences hardly exists for employees, so the contract wording matters.
Robbery, shoplifters and accidents on the way
If you are injured in a robbery or while stopping a shoplifter, that is an accident at work. The direct way to and from work is covered too, but not a detour to go shopping. Private accident insurance pays on top and also covers your free time.
Event
Who pays
What is left
Injured in a robbery
statutory accident insurance
private accident insurance on top
Cash missing from the till
employer, unless fault is proven
shortfall agreement up to the allowance
Slipped disc without an accident
continued pay, then sickness benefit
no accident insurance fund payment
Permanently unable to work in retail
pension insurance only for reduced earning capacity
disability pension only privately
Part time and mini jobs in retail
Many retail sales staff work part time. Insurers usually cap the disability pension at 60 to 70 percent of gross income, so part time workers insure less. A guarantee to increase cover later without new health questions is important.
If you are exempt from pension insurance in a mini job, you do not build up compulsory contributions. For a reduced earning capacity pension you need three years of compulsory contributions within the last five years. Check whether the exemption really pays off for you.
Priorities for retail sales staff
For retail sales staff in Germany the order looks like this. If full disability cover is too expensive, a smaller pension or basic abilities insurance (Grundfähigkeitsversicherung) is better than nothing.
Priority
Insurance
Typical premium
1
Disability or basic abilities insurance
guide value 50 to 100 euros a month
2
Personal liability
about 40 to 120 euros a year
3
Employment legal cover or union
about 250 euros a year privately
4
Private accident insurance
about 60 to 260 euros a year
usually unnecessary
own professional liability, till insurance
not needed as an employee
What retail sales staff usually do not need
Retail sales staff do not need their own professional liability insurance, because the retailer is liable for damage to customers. If you open your own shop, you need business and contents insurance; we have separate pages on business types. Norman Nammert acts as an insurance broker; the commission is paid by the insurer.
Step by step
Check your contract for a shortfall agreement and allowance.
Request disability insurance and state stockroom and till duties exactly.
If the premium is high, compare basic abilities cover or a smaller pension.
Check personal liability insurance.
Sort out employment legal cover or union membership.
