Which insurance policies change when you turn 25 in Germany?
In short
Which insurance policies change when you turn 25 in Germany? Mainly health insurance: free family cover (Familienversicherung) ends on your 25th birthday, later only after military or voluntary service. Students then pay about EUR 145 to 151 a month. Your parents' liability policy often stops covering you too; your own costs about EUR 4 to 10 a month.

Health insurance: the end of family cover
In statutory health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung), children are covered free of charge through a parent: up to 23 without training or work, up to their 25th birthday while in school, vocational training or university. Military or voluntary service extends family cover beyond 25 by the length of that service.
When family cover ends at 25, your health insurer automatically keeps you as a voluntary member from the next day. You can only leave if you prove other cover. So you are never uninsured, but from your 25th birthday you get your own contribution bill.

Care insurance and child benefit: two limits around 25
The surcharge for people without children in long-term care insurance (Pflegeversicherung) starts the month after your 23rd birthday: 0.6 percentage points more. For students it is already included in the EUR 145 to 151.
At 25, child benefit for children in training also ends. That is not insurance, but your parents often lose it just when your own health contribution starts. Military or civilian service can extend this limit as well.
Liability: when your parents' policy stops covering you at 25
Unmarried children are usually covered by their parents' personal liability policy (Privathaftpflicht) only during their first training or first degree. Older policies add a fixed limit at 25. Your limit is in your parents' policy terms, not in the law.
Your own personal liability policy costs about EUR 4 to 10 a month. Let it start the day after your parents' cover ends, so there is no gap between your 25th birthday and the new policy.
What does not change automatically at 25
For car insurance, your 25th birthday is not what counts. Driving experience does: a new driver is anyone with little experience, whatever their age. Your premium falls with every claim-free year.
Disability, contents and accident insurance do not depend on turning 25 but on your life: first job, own flat, own car. Because much of this happens around 25, it pays to check all your policies at once.
When you need to do nothing at 25
If you are already employed and compulsorily insured at 25, the birthday changes nothing about your health insurance. The same applies if you already have your own liability policy.
If you are privately insured, for example as the child of a civil servant, the statutory age limit does not apply to you. Your private tariff rules count instead; read them before your 25th birthday.
Step by step
Write down what ends first: your 25th birthday, training or studies.

Report military or voluntary service with proof, if you did any.
Check your parents' liability terms to see how long you are covered.
Start your own liability policy the day after your parents' cover ends.
