Does insurance pay if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

In short

Usually not. If you put the wrong fuel in your car, German car insurance treats it as operating damage, which neither liability nor partial or comprehensive cover pays. Does insurance pay anything at all? A breakdown add-on, a special add-on for operating damage or, for a borrowed car, personal liability can help. Draining costs EUR 150 to 300 if the engine stayed off, a diesel that ran can cost thousands.

What it costs

Published costs after putting the wrong fuel in a car, and limits of individual add-ons.

ExampleTypical range
Draining, engine not startedusually EUR 150 to 300
Repair at a local garage, documented caseabout EUR 760
Same case through a mobile specialist serviceabout EUR 2,180, of which EUR 380 call-out fee
Automobile club call-outs for wrong fuelover 5,000 a year
Personal liability add-on for other people's vehiclesfor example up to EUR 3,000

The cost of AdBlue in the tank and the values in the worked example are guide values from our quoting practice.

Whether your breakdown cover pays for draining is in your terms; we are happy to check.

Worked example

Diesel estate car, 40 litres of petrol

Two outcomes after the same mistake: noticed at once, or only after two kilometres when the engine starts to stutter.

Noticed at once, engine off, drained at the petrol stationabout EUR 150 to 300
Towing to a garage with breakdown coverEUR 0
After two kilometres: pump, injectors, linesabout EUR 3,000 to 6,000
Paid by liability or comprehensive coverEUR 0

If you leave the engine off, you pay a few hundred euros. If you drive off, you can quickly face several thousand euros yourself. Calculated with guide values.

Why car insurance does not pay for wrong fuel

Comprehensive cover (Vollkasko) pays for accidents, meaning damage from a sudden event from outside. Wrong fuel in the tank damages the engine from the inside during normal use. Standard German terms exclude this kind of operating damage (Betriebsschaden), just like wear and handling mistakes.

Partial cover (Teilkasko) only covers named risks such as theft, storm or collisions with deer, and wrong fuel is not one of them. Compulsory liability (Kfz-Haftpflicht) only pays for damage you cause to others, never for your own car.

What it costs: draining or a new injection system

Whether the engine ran makes the difference. If it was not started, draining and disposing of the fuel is usually enough. If a modern diesel runs on petrol, the petrol washes the lubricating film out of the high pressure pump, metal particles spread, and often the whole injection system has to be replaced.

Who you call also matters a lot. In one documented case a mobile emergency service charged EUR 2,180, while a local garage would have charged about EUR 760 according to the consumer advice centre.

SituationWhat needs doingCost
Petrol in a diesel, engine not starteddrain the tank, dispose of the fuelusually EUR 150 to 300
Petrol in a diesel, engine has runreplace pump, injectors, lines and possibly the tankseveral thousand euros
Diesel in a petrol cardrain, check spark plugs and catalytic converterfrom about EUR 150 to 300, more with knock-on damage
E10 instead of Super E5 in an approved cartop up with the right fuelusually nothing
Super instead of Super Plusdrive gently and refuel correctlyusually nothing
AdBlue in the diesel tankdo not switch on the ignition, have tank and lines cleanedseveral hundred to several thousand euros

Who can pay after all

A breakdown cover add-on (Kfz-Schutzbrief) or membership in an automobile club pays for roadside help and towing, some also for draining. They do not pay for engine repairs. A few insurers now sell add-ons for operating damage that include certain consequences of wrong fuel.

If you put the wrong fuel in a friend's car or a hire car, your personal liability insurance (Privathaftpflicht) can help if it covers damage to borrowed vehicles. This is often capped at a fixed amount. The petrol station only pays if it made the mistake, for example with swapped nozzles or wrong labels.

When extra cover is not worth it

Wrong fuel is rare, and if you notice at once you get away with a few hundred euros. Choosing an expensive policy just for this risk does not pay off for most people.

Breakdown cover makes sense because it also helps with breakdowns and accidents for little money. If you often drive different cars, such as hire cars or car sharing, check whether your personal liability covers damage to borrowed vehicles.

Step by step

  1. Stop filling at once, do not start the engine and leave the ignition off.
  2. Tell the petrol station staff and push the car out of the way.
  3. Call your breakdown cover or automobile club and ask about draining and towing.
  4. With emergency services, get the price in writing before giving the order.
  5. With a hire car, lease car or company car, call the rental firm or fleet manager first.
  6. Keep the invoices and check your car policy and personal liability for suitable add-ons.

Checklist

  • Breakdown cover or automobile club membership with roadside help
  • Terms checked for whether draining is paid
  • Personal liability covering damage to borrowed and hired vehicles
  • Breakdown hotline number saved in your phone
  • With unfamiliar cars, fuel type checked on the filler cap before refuelling

Common mistakes

  • Starting the engine briefly to move the car aside
  • Hiring a mobile emergency service without agreeing a price first
  • Assuming comprehensive cover pays for every engine failure
  • Diluting petrol in a diesel with diesel and driving on

Questions and answers

Frequently asked

Does comprehensive cover pay if I put the wrong fuel in?

Usually not. Wrong fuel counts as operating damage. Only some policies with an operating damage add-on pay for certain consequences.

Does the petrol station pay?

Only if it caused the mistake, for example with wrongly labelled pumps or if staff filled the car.

I only put a few litres of petrol in the diesel. Is that bad?

Even a little petrol can harm modern diesel engines. Have it drained instead of topping up with diesel and hoping.

What about a hire car?

The rental firm charges for draining and repairs. Personal liability covering hired vehicles can pay, often up to a limit.

What do the fuel labels at German petrol stations mean?

Diesel is diesel. Super and Super E10 are petrol with up to 5 or 10 percent ethanol, Super Plus is higher octane petrol. The filler cap of most cars shows which fuel is allowed.

Can I deduct the costs from my taxes?

Not for private trips. For business trips ask your tax adviser.

Is E10 instead of Super a problem?

Not if your car is approved for E10. In older cars without approval a single tank is usually fine too, then refuel with the right fuel.
