How the place works
The northernmost part of the Baltic freezes over across its full width every year, and the ice holds from December into April. Where icebreakers keep leads open, the broken ice drifts with wind and current and packs into fields.
What breaks there
Ice pressure at the waterline is the real problem, not the single impact. At the berth the ice presses boats against pontoons and piles, and during the thaw fittings tear out that were frozen in all winter.
What this means for your policy
Ice pressure and drifting ice are excluded in many sets of conditions or tied to requirements. Anyone leaving a boat afloat there over winter needs explicit written agreement, usually together with a bubbler system.
