How the place works
From December to March there is ice that drifts with the wind and packs into fields. The gulf freezes from the east, and a change of weather can close an open lead within a day. Icebreakers keep the ports clear, not the water between them.
What breaks there
Drifting ice cuts into the hull, and the pressure at the waterline is the real problem: GRP takes an impact but not sustained pressure. At the berth the ice presses boats against pontoons and piles.
What this means for your policy
Ice pressure and drifting ice are excluded in many sets of conditions or tied to requirements such as a bubbler system. Anyone leaving a boat afloat there over winter needs explicit written agreement.
