How the place works
Rock, current and Atlantic swell in a confined space. The usable window is about an hour around slack water, and missing it means waiting six. With wind against tide and swell running in, the passage stops being a question of experience and becomes a question of the clock, even for seaworthy boats.
What breaks there
Cases are rare but serious: loss of steering, dismasting, hitting rock while trying to use the current. Brittany is also thinly populated, so salvage and the road to a yard are long.
What this means for your policy
Check how far salvage costs extend and whether they are paid in addition to the sum insured or out of it. On this coast that is the difference between a repaired boat and a written-off one.
