    The product is marketed and packaged as a “life jacket”, despite being identified within the product documentation and markings as a 50N buoyancy aid. A buoyancy aid does not provide the same level of protection as a life jacket and requires active participation from the wearer to remain afloat, whereas a life jacket is designed to provide face-up flotation without user intervention. The misleading description may cause consumers to overestimate the level of protection offered and use the product in circumstances for which it is not suitable, increasing the risk of drowning. What to do if your product is affected

  1. Stop using it. Put the item aside until you know what happens next. An affected lifejacket should no longer go on board, so have a replacement ready before your next trip.
  2. Contact the dealer or the manufacturer. Have the model, the serial or hull number and your receipt to hand. The maker will tell you whether your unit belongs to the affected batch and how it will be repaired or replaced.
  3. Read the notice in full. Open the notice at the authority. It often lists batch numbers, production months or barcodes that identify the affected units.
  4. Ask when buying second hand. Ask the seller whether a recall was carried out and ask to see the workshop invoice.
  5. Tell your insurer about any damage. If the product has already caused damage, report it to your insurer straight away and keep the item and its paperwork.

Where the notices come from

We take notices from two official sources. EU Safety Gate is the European Commission's rapid alert system for dangerous products, where national authorities report what they take off the market. The US Coast Guard keeps its own list of recall campaigns for recreational boats and boating equipment, and we show its cases from 2016 onwards.

From Safety Gate we keep only notices with a clear link to boating: boats, outboards and marine engines, lifejackets, jet skis, boat trailers and fire extinguishers sold for use on boats. Toys, armbands and swimming aids are left out. New notices are fetched every night. A recall that a manufacturer only announces on its own website may be missing here.
