Cruising limits extension

Boat insurance term, area: Contract

Every hull policy names the waters it applies to, and a cruising limits extension lifts that boundary for a short, defined period instead of rewriting the contract for a whole year. It exists for the single passage that leaves the home ground: a boat written for the North Sea and the Baltic heading round Land's End for the French Atlantic coast. Wordings differ widely in whether such an extension exists at all, how many weeks it runs, and whether leaving the agreed waters has to be settled in advance. None of them let a cruising range be widened once the damage has been done.

What to check: Does your wording grant a temporary extension of the cruising range, and if so for how many weeks per insurance year? Check whether going beyond the agreed waters has to be agreed before you cast off, and what is required of you when the agreed range is worldwide.
