Dismasting
Boat insurance term, area: Hull
Dismasting means the mast breaks or buckles, often because a shroud, stay or fitting gives way. A falling mast usually damages deck, guardrails and sails as well, and offshore it quickly becomes an emergency. For insurers the cause decides: a mast lost in a squall or a collision is an accident, a mast lost because the rig was old and fatigued is often treated as wear and tear. Example: an old lower shroud parts during a gybe and the mast goes over the side.
What to check: Two questions for your own policy: is breakage of mast, spars and rigging named as an insured event? And does the wording require the standing rigging to be replaced after a set number of years, or exclude losses from fatigue?
