Home port, in the boat insurance glossary
Boat insurance term, area: Contract
A home port is the berth where a boat is kept between trips and the place it returns to. Wordings rarely define the term, yet it carries weight in two ways. It is usually the destination named when a boat has to be brought back after breaking down far away, and in some contracts it sets a boundary, because cover applies only within a stated distance of it. Example: a yacht kept in Lymington loses its gearbox off Brittany and has to come home on a trailer. A change of berth belongs in writing before the season starts.
What to check: Does your wording define the home port, and does cover depend on how far the boat is from it? If the boat cannot be made seaworthy where it broke down, who arranges the transport back, and up to what amount?
