Skipper's liability
Boat insurance term, area: Liability
Skipper's liability is the third party cover that applies to a person in charge of a boat they do not own, typically a chartered yacht. It responds to injury or damage caused to other people and their property, not to damage to the charter yacht itself, which is what the security deposit and the charter company's hull policy are for. An example: while berthing in a Croatian marina the charter yacht crushes a finger pontoon and dents the boat alongside. The pontoon and the neighbouring boat belong to skipper's liability; the yacht stays with the deposit.
What to check: Two questions for your own contract: is the charter skipper extension tied to a charter agreement in your own name, a maximum charter duration and a narrower cruising range than the main cover? And what is the sum insured for it, and does it sit below the sum insured for your own boat?
