Gulf of Guayaquil: how the place works
The gulf off Ecuador is a handling point for bananas and containers, and it also counts as an area of elevated attack risk for yachts, above all when anchoring outside guarded marinas. The tidal range is considerable, the water murky and shallow.

Two separate things: theft and attack on one side, grounding in murky shallow water on the other. For the passage to the Galapagos the gulf is a usual stopover.
