Insurance broker / Insurance questions

Should you have all your insurance with one insurer in Germany?

In short

Should you have all your insurance with one insurer in Germany? Usually not all of it. A bundle often brings a discount, as an estimate 5 to 15 percent, and one contact. But rarely is one insurer good in every line. If you later cancel one policy, the discount on the others often disappears. Bundle where the policies suit you anyway and choose other lines separately.

What speaks for one insurer

Many insurers give a discount if you hold several policies with them, for example liability, home contents and buildings. You have one contact, one customer portal and often one billing date. If a claim touches several lines, such as a burst pipe affecting contents and building, there is less dispute about who pays.

That is a real benefit, but only as good as the individual policies.

What speaks against it

An insurer with strong home contents cover may have weak terms for disability or boat insurance. If you bundle everything, you take on its weaknesses too. A 10 percent discount on a EUR 70 liability policy saves EUR 7; a gap for gross negligence can cost thousands in a claim.

If you cancel one bundled policy, the discount on the others usually ends. Ask beforehand how the remaining premiums will change.

The myth that all policies get cancelled

After a claim, both sides may cancel the policy concerned: in property insurance up to one month after the settlement negotiations end (section 92 VVG), in liability insurance after the claim is accepted or rejected (section 111 VVG). This right applies to the policy with the claim, not automatically to your other policies.

At the end of each insurance period, however, either side may cancel any policy with one to three months' notice (section 11 VVG). An insurer that wants to part ways after many claims can therefore end all policies. With a bundle that hits harder, because you then need to replace everything at once.

Bundling or mixing compared

The decision depends less on the discount than on the quality of each policy.

One contact without a bundle

You can get the benefit of one contact through a broker as well. A broker must base advice on a sufficient number of insurers and policies (section 60 VVG) and can deliberately bundle contents and building with one company while placing disability cover elsewhere.

Step by step

  1. List all policies with premium, cover and renewal date.
  2. Check per line whether the terms fit.
  3. Work out the bundle discount in euros, not percent.
  4. Bundle where both terms and discount are right.
  5. Before any cancellation, ask what happens to the discount on the rest.

Checklist

  • List of all policies ready
  • Bundle discount known in euros
  • Terms checked per line
  • Effect of a single cancellation known
  • Contact for all policies agreed

Common mistakes

  • Keeping a weak policy only because of the discount
  • Believing a claim automatically cancels all policies
  • Cancelling a bundled policy without knowing the new premium of the rest
