Does supplementary dental insurance pay for veneers?
In short
Supplementary dental insurance in Germany pays for veneers only when there is a medical reason, such as a broken front tooth. Then good tariffs refund 75 to 100 percent. Purely cosmetic veneers are paid by almost no tariff and not by public insurance. A ceramic veneer costs about EUR 700 to 1,500 per tooth, so four front teeth quickly reach EUR 3,000 to 6,000.
Cost per tooth and refunds from published guides, tariff examples and the GOZ, as of 2026.
Example
Typical range
Ceramic veneer per tooth
about EUR 700 to 1,500
No-prep veneer per tooth
up to about EUR 1,500
Composite veneer per tooth
about EUR 100 to 400
GOZ 2220 fee per tooth without lab
EUR 267.38 (2.3 times) to EUR 406.88 (3.5 times)
Four ceramic veneers, medical reason, tariff example
EUR 4,000 bill, EUR 0 to 1,000 out of pocket
As of October 2026.
Prices vary widely by practice, lab and material.
Your public insurer sets the subsidy case by case;
the EUR 300 subsidy in the worked example is a guide value from our quoting practice.
Worked example
Broken front tooth after a cycling fall
A public patient chips the corner of an upper incisor. The practice recommends a ceramic veneer instead of a partial crown. His tariff has run for five years and refunds 90 percent minus the public share.
Bill for ceramic veneer including lab
EUR 1,200
Public subsidy for a partial crown
about EUR 300
Tariff: 90 percent of the bill minus the public share
EUR 780
Your share
EUR 120
With a medical reason you pay about EUR 120 instead of EUR 900. Had he wanted the veneer only for colour, the whole bill would be his.
Medical or cosmetic: that is what counts
A veneer is a thin shell of ceramic or composite bonded to the front of a tooth. Whether anyone pays depends only on the reason. If a tooth is chipped, damaged in a fall or the enamel is defective, the veneer counts as dental prosthetics. If the goal is only whiter, straighter or more even teeth, it is cosmetic treatment.
Cosmetic treatment is paid neither by public insurance nor, with very few exceptions, by supplementary dental insurance. Many terms exclude cosmetic services explicitly.
What public health insurance pays
Purely aesthetic veneers are not a public insurance benefit. If the veneer replaces a partial crown, for example after decay or a fall, public patients receive the fixed subsidy for a partial crown. You or your supplementary insurer pay the rest of the more expensive solution.
Get a written treatment and cost plan (Heil- und Kostenplan) before treatment and send it to your public insurer so the subsidy is known.
What supplementary dental insurance refunds
With a medical reason most tariffs treat the veneer like a crown or bridge. A published tariff example with four ceramic veneers for EUR 4,000: the basic tariff refunds 75 percent and leaves you EUR 1,000, the middle one 90 percent with EUR 400 left, the provider's highest tariff 100 percent.
Watch three limits: caps in the first years, the maximum GOZ rate the tariff pays up to, and the exclusion of teeth whose treatment was already recommended when you signed.

How the price is made up
The practice bills under the German fee scale for dentists (GOZ). Code 2220 covers a partial crown or veneer and has 2,067 points. At the GOZ point value of 5.62421 cents that is EUR 267.38 at 2.3 times and EUR 406.88 at 3.5 times. Bonding under code 2197 adds EUR 16.82 at 2.3 times, and lab costs often make up the largest part.
Without a medical reason, the practice bills the veneer under section 2 (3) GOZ as a service at your request and asks you to sign that the costs may not be refunded. That is a clear sign no insurer will pay.
When veneers are not a good idea
Classic veneers require grinding away healthy enamel, which cannot be undone. If you grind your teeth at night, the shells may come off early. With strong misalignment, braces are often the better route, with major damage a crown.
Composite veneers are cheaper and can usually be removed without harming the tooth. They last less long and stain more easily.
Step by step
Ask the practice whether there is a medical reason and have it recorded.
Get a treatment and cost plan with GOZ codes and lab costs.
Send the plan to your public insurer so the subsidy is known.
Send it to your supplementary insurer before treatment and ask for written confirmation.
Check whether the caps of the first years still apply.
Checklist
Medical reason documented, for example accident or substance loss
Treatment and cost plan sent to public insurer
Written confirmation from supplementary insurer
Refund rate and maximum GOZ rate of the tariff known
Caps of the first years checked
Teeth grinding checked, night guard planned if needed
Common mistakes
Taking out dental insurance to get purely cosmetic veneers paid
Signing the request-service agreement and expecting a refund later
