Does trip cancellation insurance pay out for a pregnancy?

In short

Trip cancellation insurance pays out for a pregnancy if it is discovered unexpectedly after booking or if unexpected complications stop you travelling, such as premature labour. A known pregnancy without complications is not a reason. Cancellation fees about 30 days before departure are usually 20 percent of the price, shortly before up to 90 percent.

Worked example

Long-haul trip booked, then a risk of premature birth

A couple books a EUR 3,000 trip to Thailand in January. In May the doctor finds premature contractions and advises against flying.

Price for two peopleEUR 3,000
Fees three weeks before departure, 40 percentEUR 1,200
Refund with no excessEUR 1,200
Refund with 20 percent excessEUR 960

With the certificate the insurer pays, and the partner cancels too under the family policy. Without complications the couple would have lost EUR 1,200. Guide values from our quoting practice.

When the insurance pays out for a pregnancy

German trip cancellation insurance (Reiserücktrittsversicherung) covers the unexpected. If you learn of a pregnancy after booking and the due date falls in the trip, or a long flight is not reasonable, many tariffs accept that as a reason to cancel.

A pregnancy you already knew about can still lead to a claim if unexpected complications arise, such as premature labour, a risk of premature birth or a doctor forbidding travel.

SituationDoes the insurance pay?
Pregnancy found after booking, due date in the tripyes in many tariffs
Known pregnancy, unexpected complicationsyes, with a certificate
Known pregnancy, no complications, you prefer not to flyno
Complications already known when you took out coverno
Complications during the tripnot cancellation but trip interruption cover

What is not covered

A pregnancy that runs normally is not an inability to travel for the insurer. If you cancel anyway, you carry the cancellation fees yourself.

Complications known when you took out the trip cancellation insurance are excluded. Buy the cover straight after booking, so that the early date counts.

What the medical certificate must say

The certificate should state the diagnosis, the week of pregnancy, the date of examination and why the trip is not reasonable. Without the reason the insurer will ask again.

Cancel as soon as the doctor advises against travel. Fees rise as departure approaches, and the insurer only pays the fees due when the doctor confirmed the problem.

When you do not need special cover

If the pregnancy is known and uncomplicated and you want to travel, a normal tariff is enough; it helps if something unexpected happens. If you might cancel just to be careful, book a trip with free cancellation instead.

For your time abroad you also need travel health insurance. One tariff covers delivery and premature birth up to week 36; check the limits in your own terms.

Step by step

  1. Take out trip cancellation insurance straight after booking.
  2. See a doctor as soon as problems start.
  3. Get a certificate with diagnosis, week and reason.
  4. Cancel the trip immediately.
  5. Send the cancellation invoice and certificate to the insurer.
