How much does group accident insurance cost per employee in Germany?
In short
How much group accident insurance costs per employee in Germany depends mostly on group size and job. For a EUR 100,000 disability sum, office staff in a group usually cost about EUR 36 to 70 a year, small groups up to about EUR 180 and a single person over EUR 300. Manual jobs cost more. If the employer covers the flat wage tax, about 21 percent comes on top.
Premiums per employee and year from published German examples, each with a EUR 100,000 disability sum.

24-hour group policy, EUR 100,000 disability sum with progression, direct claim, flat tax paid by the company.
Premium per head including insurance tax
about EUR 80
Total premium (25 × EUR 80)
EUR 2,000
Flat wage tax 20 percent

Solidarity surcharge 5.5 percent of the wage tax
EUR 22
About EUR 2,422 a year plus church tax, just under EUR 97 per employee or about EUR 8 a month.
What the premium depends on
Group accident insurance is priced per head. What matters is the number of insured employees, their jobs, the disability base sum with progression and whether cover runs 24 hours or only at work.
One published German example shows the group effect clearly: the same cover for an IT company costs EUR 326 per person as a single policy, EUR 182 for 10 people and EUR 70 a year from 50 people.
Factor
Effect on the cost per employee
Number of insured employees
strong, from 50 people often less than a quarter of the single price
Risk category B (manual work)
clearly higher than category A (office)
Disability base sum
direct, double the sum costs roughly double
Progression of 300 or 500 percent
noticeable extra, but far more money for severe disability
Work-only instead of 24-hour cover
cheaper, but leaves the leisure gap open
Accident pension, hospital allowance
extra premium for each option
Office or building site: the risk category
German insurers place jobs in risk categories. Office, sales and administration usually fall into category A, trades, warehouse and driving into category B. For group accident insurance per employee this means a technician costs noticeably more than an accountant for the same sum.
In mixed companies each person is classified by their job. If someone moves from office to field work, report it, otherwise the insurer may reduce a payout.
Which sum makes sense
A disability base sum of EUR 100,000 with progression is common in German group policies. With severe disability this can pay EUR 300,000 or more depending on the scale, enough to adapt a home and a car.
Lower sums barely reduce the group accident premium below the fixed costs of the policy. It is often wiser to keep the sum and drop options such as hospital allowance.
Extra costs: insurance tax and wage tax
German insurance tax of 19 percent applies to the premium, and most quotes already include it. If employees have a direct claim on the benefit, the premium is also taxable salary.
The employer can cover this wage tax at a flat 20 percent, plus 5.5 percent solidarity surcharge on the tax and church tax where applicable. Since 2024 there is no per-head cap for this. Premium and tax are business expenses.
When you do not need it
If almost all employees already have good private accident insurance, a group policy adds little. The budget may then be better spent on a company disability income or health plan.
Group accident insurance is also no substitute for income protection: it pays only after accidents, not after illness, and most cases of long-term inability to work are caused by illness.
Step by step
Count employees by job: office and manual work separately.
Decide whether cover should run 24 hours or only at work.
Choose the disability base sum and progression, then add a death benefit.
Decide whether employees get a direct claim and whether the company covers the flat tax.
Compare quotes with the same Gliedertaxe and the same definition of accident.
Checklist
Compare per-head prices always including insurance tax
Risk categories assigned correctly
Progression of at least 225 percent
Flat tax included in the budget
Rules for joiners and leavers in the policy
Common mistakes
Comparing only the price per head and ignoring the Gliedertaxe
Declaring manual workers as office staff to save premium
Forgetting the flat tax in the budget
Buying individual policies when a group policy would be far cheaper
Questions and answers
Frequently asked
What does group accident insurance cost per employee per month?
For office staff in a larger group often just EUR 3 to 6,
considerably more for small groups and manual work.
From how many employees is a group policy worth it?
Group rates often start at two or three people.
The price per head usually drops noticeably from about ten insured.
Can the company deduct the costs?
Yes, premiums and the flat tax paid by the employer are business expenses.
Is work-only cover cheaper?
Yes, but it mainly duplicates what the statutory Berufsgenossenschaft already covers.
The real gap is leisure time.
Can employees share the cost?
That is possible, but then the premium is no longer paid on top of salary,
and the social security exemption for flat-taxed premiums requires exactly that.
Does the premium rise with the age of the workforce?
In many group tariffs it does not, as many are priced independently of age and gender.
Older employees often have special benefit rules, for example from age 75.
