How much does business liability insurance cost in Germany?

In short

An office or consulting business in Germany often pays only EUR 60 to 200 a year for business liability insurance (Betriebshaftpflicht). Trades usually pay EUR 200 to 600, construction and roofing quickly over EUR 1,000. The price depends mainly on your trade, your turnover or headcount and the limit of cover, which should be at least EUR 3 million.

Worked example

Electrician with four employees

A master electrician's firm works in customers' homes and on new builds. This is how the premium adds up.

Annual turnoverEUR 280,000
Combined single limitEUR 5 million
DeductibleEUR 500 per claim
Basic cover including damage to worked items and lost keysabout EUR 400 to 620

Roughly EUR 35 to 55 a month. A single cable fire in a customer's flat quickly costs many times that.

What drives the premium

The first thing an insurer asks is what you actually do. A translator at a desk rarely causes serious damage, a roofer on scaffolding is a different story. The same turnover can therefore cost ten times as much depending on the trade.

Then come the size of the business, measured by turnover or payroll, the chosen limit, your deductible (Selbstbeteiligung) and past claims. Add-ons such as environmental damage, damage to rented premises or damage to items you are working on raise the price, but they close the gaps that matter most in practice.

FactorEffect on the premium
Trade and activityvery strong, up to ten times
Turnover or payrolldirect, more turnover means a higher premium
Limit of EUR 5 million instead of 3 millionusually only a few euros more
Deductible of EUR 250 to 500lowers the premium noticeably
Previous claimscan lead to surcharges or refusal
Add-ons such as damage to worked itemssignificant, depending on the trade

What is different if you come from abroad

In the UK or the US, public liability, product liability and professional indemnity are often sold as separate policies. In Germany, business liability usually covers injury to people, damage to property and the financial loss that follows from both, including product liability for goods you make or sell.

Pure financial loss caused by bad advice or a coding error is not included. That needs a separate policy, Vermögensschadenhaftpflicht, which is the closest match to professional indemnity. Policy wording is usually German, and the German text is what counts in a claim.

Why a higher limit costs little

Most claims are small. It gets expensive when someone is seriously injured and needs treatment, loses income or needs a pension for years. That is what the high limit is for, and because such cases are rare, moving from EUR 3 to 5 million usually costs very little.

Check that the limit applies as a combined single limit for injury, property and resulting financial loss, and that it is available at least twice per year.

Where saving becomes expensive

Cheap tariffs often exclude damage to things you are working on, such as the wall you drill into or the customer's car in your workshop. For tradespeople this is the most common claim.

Loss of customers' keys, damage to your rented premises and leaks of harmful substances are also missing from many basic tariffs. Saving a few euros a year is not a good reason to accept these gaps.

Step by step

  1. Describe exactly what your business does, including side activities.
  2. Have last year's turnover or payroll at hand.
  3. Set a limit of at least EUR 3 million, better EUR 5 million.
  4. Check which add-ons your trade needs, such as damage to worked items or rented premises.
  5. Compare quotes with the same cover, not just the price.

Checklist

  • Combined single limit of at least EUR 3 million
  • Every activity of your business named in the policy
  • Damage to items you work on at the customer's included
  • Damage to rented business premises included
  • Loss of customers' keys included if you receive any
  • Turnover or headcount reported correctly every year

Common mistakes

  • Picking the cheapest tariff and missing damage to worked items
  • Starting a new activity without telling the insurer
  • Declaring turnover too low and running into trouble after a claim
  • Assuming your personal liability policy covers your side business
  • Expecting professional indemnity to be included

Questions and answers

Frequently asked

How much is business liability insurance per month?

For office work and small service businesses often EUR 5 to 15, for trades usually EUR 20 to 50, for construction and roofing considerably more.

What does it cost for a small side business?

If you work alone with little turnover, often EUR 60 to 200 a year depending on the trade. Manual work costs more.

Can I deduct it from my taxes?

Yes, the premium is a business expense and reduces your profit. Ask a tax adviser if in doubt.

Can I get a policy in English?

Some insurers offer English documents or service, many do not. The German terms apply in a claim, so ask us when a clause is unclear.

Why has my premium gone up?

Often your reported turnover or payroll has grown, since the premium is based on it. Claims or a new tariff calculation can also be the reason.

Is business liability the same as professional indemnity?

No. Business liability covers injury and property damage, professional indemnity covers pure financial loss from mistakes in your advice or work. Many freelancers need both, often in one contract.
