In short
For liability and partial cover you usually pay EUR 300 to 800 a year, with comprehensive cover about EUR 500 to 1,500. The value of the motorhome, your no-claims class and where it is parked make the difference. Fixed fittings are covered by partial and comprehensive cover, luggage and camping gear need a separate add-on.
Published premium ranges for motorhomes in Germany, 2026, per year.
| Example | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Liability and partial cover, used motorhome | about EUR 300 to 800 |
| Comprehensive cover, newer motorhome | about EUR 500 to 1,500 |
| Integrated motorhome, built 2019, SF 5, under 10,000 km, comprehensive | about EUR 900 to 1,500 |
| Contents cover for gear and luggage | about EUR 50 to 200 |
| Breakdown cover | about EUR 30 to 80 |
| Vehicle tax up to 3.5 tonnes, class S4 or better | EUR 240 |

Worked example
This is how the premium adds up if the vehicle is registered from April to October and kept in a hall in winter.
| Liability, EUR 100 million flat sum | about EUR 150 to 250 |
| Comprehensive with EUR 500, partial with EUR 150 deductible | about EUR 350 to 650 |
| Seasonal plate April to October | already included |
| Contents add-on for gear | about EUR 60 to 100 |
| Vehicle tax 3.5 tonnes, class S4 or better, season only | about EUR 140 |
Together about EUR 560 to 1,000 a year for insurance, plus around EUR 140 tax. Without comprehensive cover, only with partial cover, insurance would be closer to EUR 350 to 550.
Motorhomes (Wohnmobil) are driven little on average and cause fewer accidents than everyday cars. Liability is therefore often cheaper than for a car. Partial and comprehensive cover get expensive, because damage to the living area quickly reaches five figures and the vehicles often cost EUR 50,000 or more.
Your no-claims class, where you live, the age of the drivers, annual mileage and where the vehicle is parked also count. Some policies only accept motorhomes up to a certain age or weight.
| Factor | Effect on the premium |
|---|---|
| New value and age of the vehicle | strong, above all in comprehensive cover |
| No-claims class | strong, SF 0 can cost double |
| Seasonal plate | lowers the premium, because only the driving months count |
| Deductible EUR 300 instead of 150 in comprehensive cover | noticeably lowers the own damage part |
| Parked in a hall or on fenced ground | lowers mainly the theft part |
| Drivers under 25 | clear surcharge |
| Occasional renting out | surcharge or separate policy needed |
If you have no German driving history, a motorhome can start in a low class and cost far more than the figures above. Many insurers consider a claims history statement from your previous insurer. Within the EU they have to treat such a statement like a German one when they use claims history at all. For statements from outside the EU it depends on the insurer.
If you already have a car insured in Germany with some claim free years, ask for a second vehicle classification. Many insurers place a motorhome in a better class based on the car. Also check your licence: a car licence (class B) covers motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes, heavier vehicles need class C1.
Partial and comprehensive cover protect the vehicle with fixed parts, meaning kitchen, bathroom, furniture and usually awning and solar panels. Report parts you added later, otherwise they are missing from the sum. Loose things such as bikes on the rack, clothes, laptop and camping furniture are not covered.
Contents insurance (Hausrat) helps only to a limited extent on the road, because outside the home it often pays only a small part of the sum and frequently excludes theft from vehicles. If you carry a lot of gear, a contents add-on for the motorhome is the better choice. With little luggage you can skip it.
Breakdown cover (Schutzbrief) organises towing, spare parts and transport home. Check that it applies to your weight and length: some only cover vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes or cap the cost of bringing a large vehicle back.
Within the EU liability applies without an add-on. If you drive to Turkey, Morocco or other countries outside the EU, you need the Green Card with the right country code. For long trips, check how long partial and comprehensive cover apply abroad in one go.
Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes can be insured, but the choice is smaller and the cover more expensive. The tax rises too, at 6.6 tonnes it is already around EUR 495 a year.
If you occasionally rent your motorhome to others, tell the insurer beforehand. Many private policies exclude renting out, and then cover is missing after a claim. Renting through a platform often brings its own insurance, but check what remains with your own policy.
Questions and answers
With liability and partial cover usually about EUR 25 to 70, with comprehensive cover about EUR 40 to 125, depending on value and no-claims class.
Liability is often cheaper, because motorhomes are driven little. Partial and comprehensive cover are usually more expensive due to the high value and costly repairs to the living area.
For a new or financed vehicle almost always. For an older motorhome worth a few thousand euros, partial cover against theft, storm, hail and glass is often enough.
Usually not through partial or comprehensive cover, because it is not fixed. Some contents add-ons include awning tents and camping furniture, check the offer.
Often, if you bring a claims history statement. Within the EU insurers that use claims history must treat it like a German one.
Yes, if you are sure not to drive in winter. You save insurance and tax for the months without registration, but the vehicle must then stand on private ground.
Up to 3.5 tonnes with emission class S4 or better EUR 240 a year. Older vehicles with a worse class and heavier motorhomes pay more.
