Is there income protection insurance without health questions in Germany?

In short

Is there income protection insurance without health questions in Germany? Not for a normal new policy. There are four routes with fewer or no questions of your own: short-form offers up to about EUR 2,000 a month, raising an existing policy, employer group cover from about 10 insured people, and waiting-period products that only pay savings contributions.

Why there is no new policy without questions

German disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung, BU) pays for decades. Without health questions, mainly people who expect to stop working soon would sign up. Only disability that starts after the policy begins is covered.

Instead there are four special routes, each with a limit worth knowing.

The four routes compared

Which route is open to you depends on age, job, employer and existing contracts.

RouteOwn questionsPensionLimit
Short-form offera fewusually up to EUR 2,000age and target group

Employer group covernoneusually EUR 2,000 to 2,500group contract, fully taxable
Waiting-period productnoneno pension3 years waiting, contributions only

A short form still has consequences

The duty of disclosure in section 19 of the Insurance Contract Act (VVG) also applies to short forms. Wrongly confirming "fully fit for work" can cost you all cover. Short questions are often broad, for example about advice for mental health issues in the last five years.

If you are healthy, a short form brings little; the regular tariff often offers more events for later increases.

Group cover through your employer

With a group contract and an employer declaration (Dienstobliegenheitserklärung), the employer confirms that staff are fit for work and you answer no questions yourself. The trade-off: the pension is often too low, fully taxable, and changing jobs can be complicated. Your own knowledge of your health still counts (section 156 VVG).

Norman Nammert arranges cover as an insurance broker (Versicherungsmakler). The insurer pays the commission. With pre-existing conditions an anonymous risk enquiry (Risikovoranfrage) is usually the better route.

Step by step

  1. Check whether an existing policy has an increase option.
  2. Ask your employer about a group contract.
  3. Use short forms only if you can honestly answer no to every question.
  4. With pre-existing conditions, make an anonymous enquiry first.
  5. Compare the net pension of each route.

Checklist

  • Age limit of the offer checked
  • Short questions read word for word
  • Increase events in the old policy known
  • Tax on group pension considered
  • Portability when changing jobs clarified

Common mistakes

  • Confirming a short question without reading it
  • Treating a waiting-period product as income replacement
  • Relying only on group cover without calculating the net pension
