Can you insure a private submarine in Germany?

In short

Yes, you can insure a private submarine, but not through a standard tariff, only on request in the specialist marine insurance market. Germany has no nationwide compulsory insurance for private boats. For yachts, market overviews quote 1 to 5 percent of the value per year; two person submersibles usually cost USD 1 to 5 million.

Can you insure a private submarine in Germany?

What it costs

No premiums are published for private submarines. These figures show the order of magnitude.

ExampleTypical range
Purchase price, compact two person submersiblefrom about USD 632,800 before options
Purchase price, typical two person leisure submarineabout USD 1 to 5 million
Annual yacht premium as a guideabout 1 to 5 percent of the value
For comparison: liability for a small 20 hp motor boat in Germanyabout EUR 35 to 44 a year before tax

Purchase prices from a market overview of July 2026,

yacht percentages from a US overview of November 2024,

boat liability from a German price example of July 2026.

Applying yacht percentages to submarines is a guide value from quoting practice;

a real quote depends on value, depth and use.

Worked example

Two person submarine worth USD 1 million, launched from a yacht in the Mediterranean

A rough estimate of the hull premium.

Value of the submersibleUSD 1,000,000
Hull at 1 percentUSD 10,000 a year
Hull at 5 percentUSD 50,000 a year

Hull cover alone is roughly USD 10,000 to 50,000 a year, plus liability. This is an estimate based on yacht values, not a quote.

Is insurance compulsory for a private submarine?

Germany has no nationwide legal duty to insure private pleasure boats, and there is no separate rule for private submarines either. Many marinas and harbours do, however, ask for proof of liability insurance (Bootshaftpflicht) before giving you a berth.

If you use the submersible abroad, for example in the Mediterranean, insurance is often compulsory there. Check what the host country requires before every trip with the submarine.

Liability: what a submarine can damage

A submersible can hit divers, swimmers, boats on the surface or harbour structures. If you are found at fault, you are liable under general civil law without a cap, with your private assets if necessary.

For boats, liability sums of EUR 5 to 10 million for personal injury and property damage are recommended. There is no standard tariff for a submarine; insurers assess each submersible individually.

Hull cover for the submersible

Hull cover pays for damage to your own submarine. With prices from about USD 600,000 for compact models up to more than USD 40 million for deep diving subs, it is the most expensive part.

No premiums for submarines are published. Specialist marine underwriters base the premium on value and depth rating. As a rough guide, market overviews quote 1 to 5 percent of the value per year for yachts.

SubmersiblePurchase priceHull at 1 to 5 percent
Compact two person modelfrom about USD 633,000about USD 6,300 to 31,600
Mid range leisure submarineabout USD 1 to 2 millionabout USD 10,000 to 100,000
Deep diving submersibleover USD 20 millionindividual quote

What to prepare for the request

There is no online form for a submarine. Have the manufacturer, year, value, rated depth, independent approval of the pressure hull, area of use and pilot training ready.

The more precise your details on maintenance, transport and mother ship, the better your chance of a quote. If the submersible is launched from a yacht, ask whether it can be added to the yacht policy.

When you do not need to insure a submarine yourself

If you only take a tourist submarine ride, you are a passenger. The operator insures the submersible; for your own accident risk, check your private accident and travel insurance for exclusions.

If you only charter a submarine, you do not need your own hull cover. Ask the owner whether their liability policy covers you as pilot.

Step by step

  1. Clarify where the submarine will operate and what harbours and host countries require.
  2. Collect documents on pressure hull, rated depth, maintenance and training.
  3. Request liability with a high sum and hull cover at replacement value.
  4. Check whether the submersible can be added to the yacht policy.
  5. Read exclusions on depth, cruising area and pilots carefully.

Checklist

  • Liability sum of several million euros
  • Hull value covering the whole system including electronics
  • Rated depth named in the policy
  • All pilots named
  • Transport, launch and recovery from the mother ship included

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the yacht policy automatically covers the submersible
  • Diving deeper than agreed in the policy
  • Entering a foreign harbour without proof of liability cover
  • Setting the hull sum at the base price without options
