How do you insure a private helicopter in Germany?
In short
You insure a private helicopter in Germany first with keeper's liability insurance (Halterhaftpflicht), which section 43 of the Air Traffic Act makes compulsory. For a Robinson R44 at 1,090 kilograms, EU law requires at least 3 million Special Drawing Rights, about 3.6 million euros. A published tariff starts at about 390 euros a year for 4 million euros. Passengers, hull and seat accident cover come on top.
Published annual premiums for helicopter insurance in Germany, October 2026, including 19 percent insurance tax.
Example
Typical range
Keeper's liability, Robinson R44, 1,090 kg, 4 million euros
from about 390 euros a year
Passenger liability, Robinson R44, three seats, 5 million euros
from about 1,137 euros a year
Seat accident, 20,000 euros death and disability, per pilot seat
from about 54 euros a year
Hull, piston helicopter, agreed value 400,000 euros
about 8,000 to 16,000 euros a year
Liability and accident figures are entry prices from published tariffs.
The hull figure is a guide value from quoting practice and depends heavily on type,
experience and deductible.
SDR converted at about 1.20 euros.

The legal minimum for a helicopter
Anyone who keeps a helicopter in Germany must hold liability insurance under section 43 of the Air Traffic Act. It pays when the helicopter injures people on the ground or damages third party property, for example rotor downwash flattening a fence when you land in a field.
The minimum limit depends on maximum take off mass and is set by Article 7 of EU Regulation 785/2004. It is expressed in Special Drawing Rights (SDR), an IMF unit of account; at the end of September 2026 one SDR was worth about 1.20 euros.

under 2,700 kg

under 6,000 kg

Covering passengers in your helicopter
Keeper's liability only covers damage outside the helicopter. For people on board, Article 6 of Regulation 785/2004 sets a minimum of 250,000 SDR per passenger; for non commercial flights with aircraft up to 2,700 kilograms, member states may set a lower figure.
A published German tariff for passenger liability (Passagierhaftpflicht) on a Robinson R44 with three passenger seats starts at about 1,137 euros a year for 5 million euros.
Hull insurance for the helicopter itself
Hull insurance (Luftfahrtkasko) pays for damage to your own helicopter after a hard landing, a rotor strike, fire, storm or theft, minus your deductible. It is written on an agreed value.
Helicopter hull premiums are not published as tariffs in Germany; each one is calculated by type, value and pilot experience. As a guide value from quoting practice, expect roughly 2 to 4 percent of the agreed value per year.
Check your accident policy as a helicopter pilot
The German insurance industry's model accident conditions (AUB 2020, June 2025 version) exclude accidents while piloting an aircraft for which German law requires a licence. As a helicopter pilot you may therefore have no cover under a standard accident policy (Unfallversicherung).
A seat accident policy (Sitzplatzunfallversicherung) for the helicopter fills that gap. One published tariff pays 20,000 euros for death and disability from 54 euros per pilot seat and 42 euros per passenger seat a year.
When you can skip hull cover
If the helicopter is paid off and you could absorb a total loss from savings, compulsory liability plus passenger cover may be enough. On an older helicopter with low market value, hull premiums quickly eat up a large share of what the machine is worth.
If the helicopter is financed or leased, the lender will usually insist on hull cover. Where several owners share one helicopter, every pilot must be named in the pilot clause.
Step by step
Read maximum take off mass and number of seats from the aircraft documents.
Choose a liability limit, ideally above the legal minimum.
Add passenger liability for every passenger seat or a combined limit.
Decide on hull cover based on value, financing and savings.
Name every pilot with licence and hours on type for the pilot clause.
Check your own accident policy for the pilot exclusion.
Checklist
Insurance certificate on board
Liability limit at least the weight class minimum

Common mistakes
Assuming personal liability insurance (Privathaftpflicht) covers the helicopter
Carrying friends without passenger liability
Relying on a standard accident policy as the pilot
Forgetting to add a new co pilot to the pilot clause
Questions and answers
Frequently asked
Does my personal liability policy cover a helicopter?
No.
German personal liability policies exclude manned aircraft.
You need keeper's liability under the Air Traffic Act.
What are Special Drawing Rights?
A unit of account of the International Monetary Fund based on several currencies.
At the end of September 2026 one SDR was worth about 1.20 euros.
Why is helicopter hull cover so expensive?
Rotor, gearbox and engine are costly, and small handling errors cause big damage.
Experience on type lowers the premium.
Do I need passenger cover for friends who fly free?
Yes.
The passenger minimum in Article 6 of Regulation 785/2004 applies to private flights too;
states may only lower it for aircraft up to 2,700 kilograms.
