How much does microlight aircraft insurance cost in Germany?
In short
In Germany owner liability insurance for a microlight aircraft (Ultraleichtflugzeug, UL) is compulsory under section 43 of the Aviation Act (LuftVG) and costs about EUR 119 to 202 a year for a three axis microlight. With passenger liability (CSL) you pay about EUR 357 to 476. Hull and seat accident cover are optional; hull cover for a EUR 50,000 microlight starts at about EUR 607 a year.

The owner regularly flies with a passenger and wants the aircraft itself insured too.
CSL with EUR 3 million
EUR 357.00
Hull, EUR 2,000 deductible
from EUR 607.00
Seat accident for two seats
EUR 142.80

Which microlight insurance is compulsory in Germany
Under section 43 of the German Aviation Act the keeper of an aircraft must take out liability insurance. This also applies to microlights. The minimum amount follows from EU Regulation 785/2004: for aircraft below 500 kg maximum take off mass, 750,000 special drawing rights per accident. Special drawing rights are an accounting unit of the International Monetary Fund.
This owner liability covers third parties on the ground, such as the house you crash into or a person in the field. It does not cover your passenger. For that you need passenger liability; the regulation requires 250,000 special drawing rights per passenger, and for non commercial flights up to 2,700 kg states may set a lower minimum of at least 100,000.
What CSL means for a microlight
CSL stands for combined single limit. Owner and passenger liability share one sum insured. For a two seater that regularly carries a passenger this is the usual solution.
A German microlight association recommends at least EUR 3 million for CSL. For three axis microlights and gyroplanes from 500 kg maximum take off mass its group tariff requires at least EUR 2 million cover.

Hull cover for your microlight
Hull cover (Kasko) pays for damage to your own aircraft, for example after a hard landing or damage on the ground. It is optional, but lenders often require it if the microlight is financed.
The premium depends on value, type, pilot experience and deductible. A published example: a microlight insured for EUR 50,000, one pilot and EUR 2,000 deductible per partial loss starts at EUR 607 a year including 19 percent German insurance tax.
Seat accident cover and when you may not need it
Seat accident insurance pays a fixed sum to occupants. In the association tariff EUR 20,000 per seat costs EUR 71.40 a year.
If you and your passengers already have private accident insurance that includes air sports, seat cover is more of a top up. Check whether your accident policy excludes flying as a microlight pilot.
How a broker can help with microlight insurance
Norman Nammert works as an insurance broker (Versicherungsmakler) and can compare quotes for liability, hull and accident cover for a microlight aircraft. The insurer pays the commission, so the service is free for you.
Step by step
Decide whether passengers fly with you regularly; if so, choose CSL instead of owner liability only.
Choose the sum insured, at least EUR 3 million for CSL.
Set the value of the microlight and decide whether hull cover is needed.
Check existing accident insurance for air sports exclusions.
Compare several quotes with the same cover and deductible.
