To insure a vintage tractor in Germany you need at least motor liability insurance (Kfz-Haftpflicht) once it is registered. From 30 years of age the historic H plate (H-Kennzeichen) is possible, and classic vehicle rates charge about EUR 40 to 110 a year for liability. Most require that the tractor no longer works on the farm. Partial cover pays off from a value of about EUR 15,000.

Working tractor or collector's piece
First decide how you use the vintage tractor. If it still works regularly in farming or forestry, it belongs on a normal motor policy for tractors. Classic rates exclude that kind of work.
If it only goes to shows, rallies and parades, a classic rate fits. It is much cheaper but usually requires secure storage in a garage, shed or barn and limits mileage, with one insurer to 10,000 km a year.

Getting the H plate for a vintage tractor
Under section 2 no. 22 of the vehicle registration ordinance (FZV), a vehicle counts as a classic if it was first put on the road at least 30 years ago and is largely original and well kept. An expert report under section 23 StVZO proves this and costs about EUR 80 to 200.
With an H plate you pay a flat EUR 191.73 vehicle tax a year. A tractor on a green plate is tax free, but only while it is used exclusively in a farming or forestry business (section 3 no. 7 KraftStG). For a hobby tractor the H plate is the usual route.
Choosing liability and damage cover
Liability cover pays for damage you cause to others, for example to a parked car while manoeuvring at a show. On classic rates it costs about EUR 40 to 110 a year. Normal tractor policies range from about EUR 20 to 170 up to 44 kW and up to EUR 600 for stronger machines.
Partial cover pays for fire, theft and storms, among others; comprehensive cover also pays for accidents you cause yourself. For a simple tractor without rarity value, liability alone is often enough.
When a classic rate is the wrong choice
If you need the old tractor for real jobs such as logging or mowing, a classic rate is the wrong contract. After a claim the insurer can check whether your use matched the policy.
Norman Nammert arranges cover as an insurance broker (Versicherungsmakler) and compares classic and tractor policies. The insurer pays the commission, so the service is free for you.
Step by step
Decide whether the tractor still works or is only driven for pleasure.
Have an expert report under section 23 StVZO done for the H plate.
Get the value assessed and choose damage cover to match.
Check classic rates for mileage limits and storage rules.
Register the tractor with the insurer's electronic confirmation.
