Is disability insurance worth it for children and school pupils in Germany?
In short
Disability insurance for school pupils in Germany is worth it mainly to lock in your child's health today. Most insurers accept children from age 10, and EUR 1,000 of monthly benefit costs about EUR 24 to 47 a month at 12 to 15. For younger children, child invalidity insurance is the better fit.

Worked example
Girl aged 12 at grammar school
The parents take out EUR 1,000 of monthly benefit until 67 with a starter phase and raise it after university using the increase option.
Premium in the first 10 years
EUR 24.25 a month
Premium from year 11
EUR 47.12 a month
Health questions
once, at age 12
Asthma diagnosed at 17
no effect on the existing policy
After university
increase without new health check, depending on the policy
The family pays less than EUR 300 a year during school and secures a policy the young woman with asthma would later only have got with a surcharge or exclusion.
What disability insurance for pupils pays
Occupational disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung, BU) for pupils pays a monthly benefit if your child is expected to manage less than half of their lessons for at least six months. Good policies look at the actual school day, including school type, the way to school, homework and study time, and do not refer the child to an easier school type.
After leaving school the policy continues, and once training or university starts, the new occupation becomes the yardstick. Many policies then let you raise the benefit without new health questions.
Why the German state pays almost nothing for pupils
Children are covered by statutory accident insurance at nursery, school and on the way there. If your child falls ill instead, for example with rheumatism, epilepsy, cancer or depression, statutory accident insurance pays nothing.
The state pension for reduced earning capacity (Erwerbsminderungsrente) normally requires five years of contributions, with easier rules for young people only after training and at least one year of compulsory contributions. A school child meets neither. From 18, basic income support (Grundsicherung) is often all that remains.
The real reason: your child's health today
The main value of disability insurance for pupils is not the low premium but the health questions. A child who is healthy at 12 and takes out a policy keeps the cover even if asthma, an eating disorder or psychotherapy follows at 16. Someone asking only at 25 often gets an exclusion, a surcharge or a refusal.
The flip side: health questions also apply to children. If a diagnosis such as ADHD, asthma or psychotherapy already exists, it gets difficult. Honest and complete answers are essential, otherwise the insurer may later withdraw from the contract.
Pupil disability cover or child invalidity insurance
For children under 10 there is usually no disability insurance. Child invalidity insurance (Kinderinvaliditätsversicherung) covers the financial impact of a disability from accident or illness, often with a lifelong pension. EUR 1,000 of monthly pension costs about EUR 300 a year.
From age 10, disability insurance for pupils is the better route if the goal is to protect future income. Child invalidity insurance usually ends at 18 and cannot simply be converted into disability cover.

When it is not worth it for children and pupils
If the family budget is tight, personal liability cover and protection against your child's disability come first. Disability insurance for a pupil runs 50 years or more, and the premiums add up to several tens of thousands of euros.
It is also not worth it if the benefit is set too low and there is no option to increase it. EUR 350 a month will not protect an adult income. Make sure the benefit can rise to at least EUR 1,500 to 2,000 without a new health check.
Step by step
Check whether your child is healthy and the health questions can be answered cleanly.
Before the 10th birthday, consider child invalidity insurance.
From age 10, compare offers with a pupil clause.
Choose at least EUR 1,000 of benefit and an increase option up to EUR 2,000 or more.
Decide consciously on a starter phase or indexation, not on the lowest first premium.
Get records from the paediatrician and health insurer for the health questions.
