Is income protection insurance worth it for an office job in Germany?

In short

Yes, income protection insurance is worth it for an office job in Germany, and it is cheap there. Accidents cause fewer than 10 percent of claims; desk work usually ends through mental illness, back problems or cancer. Office workers often pay EUR 35 to 100 a month, about EUR 70 at 30 for EUR 1,500. You can skip it if your assets carry you to retirement.

Why desk work leads to disability too

German disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung, BU) pays if you can no longer do your job. Accidents cause fewer than 10 percent of cases. The most common cause is mental illness, more than 32 percent, followed by musculoskeletal disorders at about 18 percent.

In an office job, disability rarely comes suddenly: a slipped disc that rules out long sitting, burnout, tendon inflammation in the writing hand or severe migraine.

What the state pays

If you were born after 1 January 1961, there is no statutory job protection. The pension insurance asks whether you can do any work for at least six hours a day, and you need three years of compulsory contributions in the last five years.

The average reduced earning capacity pension (Erwerbsminderungsrente) was about EUR 1,100 a month in 2025. Before that, statutory sick pay (Krankengeld) runs for at most 78 weeks in three years for the same illness.

Why cover is cheap for office jobs

Insurers place office jobs in the lowest occupational classes, so the same pension costs a fraction of what nurses or tradespeople pay.

When you do not need it

If assets, rental income or a partner's income carry you to retirement, you do not need it. Civil servants (Beamte) need a service incapacity clause instead. Norman Nammert arranges cover as an insurance broker (Versicherungsmakler); the insurer pays the commission.
