How do I insure a static mobile home in Germany?

In short

You insure a static mobile home (Mobilheim) on a German campsite with dedicated mobile home or long stay camping insurance (Dauercamperversicherung). It covers fire, storm, hail, burglary and, if chosen, contents and liability. Your home buildings insurance does not apply there. Packages start at about EUR 80 to 200 a year.

How do I insure a static mobile home in Germany?

What it costs

Premiums depend mainly on the new value of the mobile home and the modules you choose.

ExampleTypical range
Average static caravan, basic coverfrom about EUR 80 a year
Mobile home, new value EUR 30,000, building and liability without contentsabout EUR 100 to 200 a year
Mobile home, new value EUR 50,000, with contents, storm and liabilityabout EUR 150 to 300 a year

The first figure is a published value from 2026.

The second and third are guide values from quoting practice (Richtwert aus der Angebotspraxis);

your premium depends on value, site and scope.

Worked example

Mobile home at Lake Constance, new value EUR 45,000

A storm drops a tree on the roof, and the awning hits the neighbour's car.

Roof repairEUR 8,500
Damaged furniture and TVEUR 1,700
Damage to neighbour's carEUR 2,300
ExcessEUR 300

With building, contents and liability cover the insurer pays about EUR 12,200. Without mobile home insurance the couple pays everything.

Why a static mobile home needs its own policy

A static mobile home stays on the campsite and is not driven on the road. Your buildings insurance (Wohngebäudeversicherung) covers the house at the address in the policy, not the mobile home by the lake. Motor insurance does not fit either if the mobile home is not registered.

That is why German insurers offer separate mobile home and camping policies. They treat the mobile home like a small house, with building, contents and liability.

What mobile home insurance covers

A current fact sheet from a German insurer (August 2026) lists fire, lightning, explosion, theft, vandalism and glass breakage; storm, hail, flooding and liability can be added on request. Awnings, sun canopies, solar panels and contents can be included.

Claims are paid at replacement cost up to the sum insured. If an item's current value has fallen below 50 percent of its new value, this policy pays only the current value.

ModuleWhat it covers
Buildingmobile home and fixed parts against fire, storm, hail
Contentsfurniture, appliances, clothes, often against burglary and water
Accessoriesawning, canopy, solar panels, satellite dish
Natural hazardsflooding and heavy rain, usually on request
Liabilitydamage to neighbours or the site, for example from falling parts

Limits to know

Many policies only apply while the mobile home is not your main residence and is not driven on public roads. If you live in it permanently, you need a different solution.

The country matters too: the policy in the fact sheet only covers official campsites in Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Denmark, and requires a registered address in Germany. A mobile home in Spain or Italy needs another contract.

Setting the right value

Used mobile homes often cost a few thousand euros, new ones easily reach a mid five figure sum. Insure your static mobile home at new value so that a storm claim does not just pay the residual value.

Include extras such as decking, awning and solar panels. For very old or very expensive mobile homes insurers often ask for a valuation report.

Do not forget liability

If a storm tears off your awning and it damages a neighbour's car, you are liable as the owner. Check whether your personal liability insurance (Privathaftpflicht) includes a mobile home on a campsite; if not, add liability to the package.

Norman Nammert arranges mobile home insurance as an insurance broker (Versicherungsmakler). The insurer pays the commission, so it costs you nothing.

Step by step

  1. Work out the new value of the mobile home including extras.
  2. Check that your campsite is within the policy's territory.
  3. Choose modules: building, contents, storm, natural hazards, liability.
  4. Clarify whether the mobile home is a main or second home.
  5. Prepare a valuation report for an old or expensive unit.

Checklist

  • Insured at new value
  • Storm and hail included
  • Awning, canopy and solar panels covered
  • Liability for the pitch arranged
  • Campsite and country named in the policy

Common mistakes

  • Assuming your home buildings insurance applies on the campsite
  • Setting the value too low and forgetting extras
  • Moving to another pitch without updating the policy
  • Living permanently in the mobile home although the policy covers leisure use only
