How do I insure a motocross or enduro bike in Germany?
In short
A registered enduro bike in Germany needs motor liability insurance (Kfz-Haftpflicht), which excludes races and practice for them. An unregistered motocross bike may ride uninsured only on fenced, non public land or at motorsport with its own cover. Theft and your own injuries need separate cover. Experienced riders with a seasonal plate often pay under EUR 150 a year.

Registered enduro bike: liability with a racing exclusion
A registered enduro bike is insured like any motorcycle in Germany: motor liability is compulsory, partial and full comprehensive (Teilkasko, Vollkasko) are optional. With a seasonal plate (Saisonkennzeichen) you pay insurance and tax only for the months you ride.
For motocross and enduro riders this matters: the German standard wording excludes officially approved events where top speed counts, including practice runs, from liability (A.1.5.2) and comprehensive cover (A.2.9.2). Taking part in unapproved races is a breach of your duties.

Unregistered motocross bike: when no insurance is needed
Since the reform of the German Compulsory Insurance Act, use means any use as a means of transport, whatever the terrain. Without insurance, a motocross bike without type approval or registration may only ride in an area that is not a public road and is fenced or closed to the public as private enclosed property (section 2a, section 6(2) PflVG).
Riding the motocross bike across an open meadow or farm track quickly takes you outside this exception. You are then personally liable, and German personal liability insurance excludes motor vehicles that require compulsory cover.
On the track: motorsport cover and licences
For races, training, tests and demonstrations on a closed area with access control, the motor liability duty does not apply if cover under section 5d exists. It may come from owner, rider, organiser or another party and must cover at least EUR 7.5 million for injury, EUR 1.3 million for property and EUR 50,000 for pure financial loss.
This motorsport cover may exclude the rider's own injuries and damage to the bike. A rider licence from the German motorsport federation includes basic accident cover, for example EUR 32,000 for disability; training and track days need an add on.
Covering theft and your own injuries
Partial comprehensive cover against theft exists only for registered bikes. For a pure motocross bike you need separate property cover, which you have to ask for specifically. Keep the receipt, frame number and photos.
Check your private accident policy for exclusions for races and practice. Norman Nammert arranges suitable policies as an insurance broker; the insurer pays the commission, so the service is free for you.
Step by step
Check whether your bike is registered or used off road only.
If registered: take out motor liability and consider a seasonal plate.
If unregistered: ride only on fenced, non public land.
Before training or racing, ask which section 5d cover applies there.
Ask specifically for theft and accident cover and read the exclusions.
