All about this insurance: Occupational disability
Do I need occupational disability insurance if I have just moved to Germany?
Insurance broker / Insurance questions / Occupational disability
In short
Usually not. A German occupational disability policy (BU) has little or no surrender value, and a new one costs more because you are older and asks the health questions again. You may cancel at any time to the end of the insurance period (section 168 VVG). It makes sense if a replacement is already accepted or you no longer need cover, for example shortly before retirement or when you leave Germany for good.
What cancelling and later reapplying can cost. Premium examples come from published German tariff examples and show how age and end age move the price.
| Example | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Office clerk, age 30, EUR 1,500 benefit to 67 | from about EUR 48 a month |
| Office clerk, age 35, EUR 1,500 benefit | about EUR 54 to 66 a month |
| Plumbing and heating fitter, age 30, EUR 1,500 benefit to 67 | from about EUR 100 a month |
| Same fitter, benefit only to 65 | from about EUR 85 a month |
| Surrender value of a standalone BU on cancellation | usually EUR 0 or a small amount |
| Benefit claim of EUR 1,500 a month over 20 years | EUR 360,000 that disappears with cancellation |
As of October 2026. Premium examples from publicly quoted tariff examples of 2024 and April 2026; your premium may differ by tariff, job and health. How much remains after a paid-up conversion and how long premiums can be deferred differs by contract; those figures are guide values from our quoting practice.
Worked example
She took out the BU at 30 after moving to Munich, EUR 1,500 benefit to 67, payment premium now EUR 70. She has been treated for back pain for three years.
| Saving if she cancels, until 67 | EUR 70 × 12 × 20 years = EUR 16,800 |
| Possible benefit until 67 | up to EUR 1,500 × 12 × 20 years = EUR 360,000 |
| New policy at 47 with a back finding | much more expensive, with a back exclusion or rejected |
| Lower benefit to EUR 1,000 | premium falls by roughly a third, cover stays |
Cancelling saves EUR 16,800 and gives up cover she could not get today. Better: lower the benefit or defer during a squeeze. Cancelling would only be right if her savings could carry 20 years without income.
The most valuable part of your BU is not on the premium notice. The insurer accepted you with your health on the day the policy started. Back trouble, therapy or high blood pressure that appeared since then no longer matter for that contract. A new application asks about all of it again and can lead to exclusions, loadings or rejection.
Age adds to that: the later you apply, the more the same cover costs. A standalone BU also builds no savings, so on cancellation you usually get nothing back. The premiums you paid bought cover for the past years; they were not an investment.
There are good reasons. If you are a few years from retirement and your savings carry you until then, you may no longer need the cover. If you become a civil servant with disability cover of your own, the old BU may be redundant. And if a new policy with clearly better terms has been accepted, switching makes sense.
Moving away from Germany is not automatically a reason. Many BU policies keep paying abroad, and finding comparable cover in your new country can be hard. Read the residence clause first. A short cash squeeze is a poor reason too: there are better ways that keep the cover.
| Your situation | Our view |
|---|---|
| New policy accepted and better | cancel, but only after the new one has started |
| Less than five years to retirement, savings sufficient | may make sense, do the maths first |
| Leaving Germany permanently | check the residence clause before deciding |
| Temporarily short of money | do not cancel, defer or lower the benefit |
| Health worse than at the start | do not cancel under any circumstances |
| Pending claim or receiving benefit | do not cancel under any circumstances |
Deferral (Stundung): many insurers let you pause premiums for some months while cover continues. You pay the deferred premiums later. This fits parental leave, unemployment or setting up a business.
Paid-up policy (Beitragsfreistellung): under section 165 VVG you can ask for the contract to continue without further premiums if an agreed minimum benefit is reached. With a pure BU often only a small benefit is left, so ask for the figure first. A third way is a lower benefit: EUR 1,000 instead of EUR 1,500 is better than nothing, and an increase option (Nachversicherungsgarantie) often lets you raise it again later without health questions.
German BU contracts usually show a gross premium (Bruttobeitrag) and a lower payment premium (Zahlbeitrag). The difference is covered by surpluses. If surpluses fall, the payment premium rises, at most up to the gross premium. That is built into the contract, not a breach of it.
Before switching for that reason, compare the new payment premium with a quote for a new policy at your current age. The old contract is often still cheaper. If the increase comes from agreed indexation, you can usually decline it without cancelling.
Cancel the old BU only after the new policy is accepted and cover has started. Answer the new health questions fully. Under section 21 (3) VVG the insurer can rescind for negligent wrong answers for five years and for intentional ones for ten. Your old contract no longer carried that risk after some years.
If your BU is a rider to a life or pension policy, it ends with the main contract. Check before cancelling the main policy. A BU through your employer can often be continued privately when you change jobs; ask before you leave.
Questions and answers
In text form, meaning letter, email or the customer portal, with your policy number and the desired date. It takes effect at the end of the current insurance period, usually month end for monthly payers. German is not required, but it avoids delays.
With a standalone BU usually not, or very little, because it builds no savings. A BU rider on a life or pension policy has a surrender value from the savings part of the main contract.
Many contracts allow a deferral for some months with cover continuing. You pay the premiums later. Ask about the terms of your contract.
You pay nothing more, but the insured benefit falls sharply, or the contract ends if the minimum benefit is not reached. Ask for the remaining benefit first.
Not automatically. Many policies pay worldwide as long as premiums are paid and the medical evidence can be provided. Check the residence clause and whether you can pay from abroad.
You have a 30 day withdrawal right after taking out a BU. After that, only cancellation to the end of the insurance period remains.
