What insurance do employed engineers in Germany need?
In short
What insurance employed engineers in Germany need depends mostly on whether you work at a desk or on sites and plants. First comes disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung), often from EUR 30 to 50 a month for young office staff. Then private liability and legal cover for private and work disputes at about EUR 250 a year. You rarely need your own professional liability policy as an employee.
Private and employment legal cover, single, EUR 150 deductible
about EUR 250 a year
Engineer, 35, office with occasional site visits, EUR 2,000 disability benefit
about EUR 70 to 120 a month
The last value is a guide value from our quoting practice.
Your premium depends on age, health, share of physical work and benefit amount.
Worked example
Engineer, 32, EUR 4,500 gross, office with site visits
How big the gap would be if she could no longer work as an engineer after a long illness. Net pay is assumed to be EUR 2,900.
First six weeks
full salary from the employer
Sickness benefit from week seven
70 percent of EUR 4,500, at most 90 percent of EUR 2,900, so up to EUR 2,610 before social contributions
After 78 weeks without private cover
state pension only if she cannot work six hours in any job
Private disability benefit EUR 2,000
guide value about EUR 70 to 120 a month
With private disability cover about two thirds of her net pay stay secure, even if she could still do some other job.
Typical risks for engineers
As an employed engineer you are responsible for calculations, drawings and installations. Mistakes can be expensive, but the heavier financial risk for most engineers is being unable to work in engineering for good because of illness or an accident.
Insurers price by what you actually do. Engineers who mostly plan at a desk are usually rated cheaper for disability and accident cover than engineers who regularly work on construction sites, in workshops or on plants.

What the German system already covers
If you fall ill, your employer keeps paying your salary for up to six weeks (Entgeltfortzahlung). After that, statutory health insurance pays sickness benefit (Krankengeld): 70 percent of gross pay subject to contributions, at most 90 percent of net pay, for up to 78 weeks within three years for the same illness.
Accidents at work and on the way to work are covered by your employer's statutory accident insurance, including when working from home. But engineers born after 1 January 1961 get no state pension for being unable to work in their own profession. The reduced earning capacity pension (Erwerbsminderungsrente) only pays if you cannot work six hours a day in any job, and averaged around EUR 1,041 a month.
Liability for mistakes as an engineer
If you cause damage at work as an employed engineer, your liability towards your employer is limited by German labour court rules (innerbetrieblicher Schadensausgleich): no liability for slight negligence, a share for medium negligence, usually full liability for gross negligence and always for intent. Your employer has to prove you were at fault (section 619a BGB).
Your private liability insurance (Privathaftpflicht) does not help here: the model conditions only cover risks of daily life as a private person, expressly not from a job or public office. Engineers only need their own professional liability once they plan, inspect or write reports on their own account. We have separate pages for self-employed trades.
Professional pension fund instead of state pension?
Some engineers are compulsory members of a chamber of engineers and its pension fund (Versorgungswerk) by law. They can then be exempted from the state pension scheme under section 6 (1) no. 1 SGB VI, and the fund's own rules decide what it pays if you can no longer work.
If that applies to you as an engineer, ask the fund from what degree of incapacity it pays and how much the pension would be today. Only with that figure can you set a sensible amount for private disability cover.
Order of priority for employed engineers
For most employed engineers in Germany the order is clear. The top rows protect against losses that change your life; the bottom rows are useful but can wait.
from about EUR 30 to 50 a month, clearly more with age and site work
2
Private liability (Privathaftpflicht)
small annual premium, private risks only
3
Private and employment legal cover (Rechtsschutz)
about EUR 250 a year with EUR 150 deductible
4
Private accident insurance, if you work on sites
about EUR 60 to 180 a year for office jobs, EUR 120 to 260 for physical work
later
Term life insurance once you have a family or a loan
depends on sum and age
What engineers rarely need
Your own professional liability policy is usually wasted money for employed engineers without side work, because liability towards the employer is limited. Check instead whether your employment contract contains a special liability clause.
Accident insurance does not replace disability insurance: it only pays after accidents, not when an illness forces engineers out of their profession. Norman Nammert arranges these policies as an insurance broker (Versicherungsmakler); the commission is paid by the insurer, so it costs you nothing.
Step by step
Write down how much time you spend at a desk and how much on sites, plants or in labs.
Check whether you are in the state pension scheme or a professional pension fund.
Take out disability insurance as young as possible, with a benefit of about 60 to 80 percent of net pay.
Check private liability and legal cover with an employment module.
Report any side work on your own account and insure it separately.
