What insurance does a blended family in Germany need?
In short
What insurance does a blended family in Germany need? Above all a family liability policy that includes every child, about EUR 60 to 180 a year, and term life insurance with updated beneficiaries. An unmarried partner and their children are only covered if the policy says so. If your former partner is still named as beneficiary, they receive the money when you die.

What is different in a blended family
In a blended family (Patchworkfamilie) children from earlier relationships live together, often with a partner you are not married to. Insurance works with fixed groups: spouse, own children, stepchildren. Anyone not expressly named can fall through.
The table shows where a blended family in Germany stands with and without marriage.

Survivors' pension

Under the German model terms for personal liability (Privathaftpflicht), spouses and children including step, adopted and foster children are covered. An unmarried partner and their children are included only by special agreement, usually by name and with a shared address.
Children who move between two homes are covered through the parent whose policy names them. Two policies in one household are often duplicates; one can be cancelled at renewal.
Health insurance for the children
Stepchildren get free family cover (Familienversicherung) through you if you mainly support them or took them into your household. Stepchildren here means children of your spouse or registered partner. Children of an unmarried partner usually stay covered through their birth parents.
Tell your fund (Krankenkasse) about changes, for example when a child moves into your home for good.
Term life: the beneficiary is the most common mistake
Many policies date from an earlier relationship. If your former partner is still the named beneficiary, the insurer pays them when you die, even after separation and remarriage. Change the beneficiary in writing and name people explicitly.
A blended family often has several maintenance duties: for children from the first relationship and for the new family. The sum insured should cover both. If you want children from a first marriage to receive money directly, a separate policy in their favour can help.
Inheritance tax without marriage
A payout a third party receives from the deceased person's policy counts as acquisition on death under German inheritance tax law. Spouses have a EUR 500,000 allowance, children and stepchildren EUR 400,000, an unmarried partner only EUR 20,000.
Unmarried couples therefore often take out term life crosswise: each insures the other's life and pays the premium. Stepchildren do not inherit automatically, only by will; for tax they rank like your own children.
What a blended family does not need
Two contents policies (Hausrat) for one home are unnecessary, as are two liability policies covering the same people. Merge them and cancel the duplicate at renewal.
Norman Nammert works as an insurance broker (Versicherungsmakler) and checks for a blended family who is in which contract and where a beneficiary still points to an earlier relationship. The insurer pays the commission, so the check is free for you.
