Which insurance do train drivers and truck drivers in Germany need?
In short
Which insurance do train drivers and truck drivers in Germany need? It follows from the main risk: losing medical fitness to drive. So occupational disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung) comes first, usually EUR 90 to 160 a month for a EUR 1,500 pension at 30. Then personal liability and cover against employer recourse, which a train drivers' union includes for 0.9 percent of gross pay.
Published fees and premiums in Germany, as of October 2026.

A lean package where the union handles liability and legal cover at work.
Occupational disability, EUR 1,500 pension to 67

Union, 0.9 percent of EUR 3,800
EUR 34.20 a month
Personal liability
about EUR 4 to 10 a month
Together about EUR 128 to 204 a month. Most of it is disability cover, which replaces income if you lose your fitness.
Fitness: the risk that sets train drivers and truck drivers apart
To get a train driving licence (Triebfahrzeugführerschein) you must be medically and psychologically fit, and your employer must ensure regular medical examinations. If an examination fails, the train driver may no longer drive, even if they could still do other work.
For truck drivers, licence classes C and CE are issued for five years at most. To renew, you must prove fitness and adequate eyesight. A stroke, an eye condition or severe diabetes can end the career.
Priorities: what comes first
For train and truck drivers, income protection comes first. Liability on duty matters too, but is often absorbed by a union or the vehicle insurance.

Choosing disability cover
Good disability cover pays if you are expected to be unable to do your last job by at least 50 percent for at least six months. It pays only for illness, injury or decline in strength. Losing your licence for points or alcohol is not covered.
The statutory pension barely helps: the reduced earning capacity pension only applies if you can work less than six hours a day in any job. A train driver who may no longer drive but could work in an office gets nothing from it. For truck drivers, good tariffs differ by up to 80 percent for the same benefit.
Liability: who pays when something breaks
If a truck driver injures others on the road, the keeper's motor liability pays, because the keeper must co-insure the driver. For damage to the truck or the load, however, your employer can claim against you. One labour court rated picking up dropped glasses while driving as grossly negligent but still capped liability at three months' gross pay, just under EUR 4,000.
On the railways, a train drivers' union states that the employer can claim up to six times the monthly tariff pay for gross negligence, and non-tariff companies even the full damage. The union provides work liability protection to members, except for intent, alcohol or drugs.
What train and truck drivers usually do not need
Insuring the company truck is the keeper's job. A second work legal policy alongside the union's means paying twice. Accident insurance does not replace disability cover, since fitness usually ends through illness rather than an accident. If you drive your own business, there are separate pages for business types.
