Choosing anchor weight, size, chain diameter and equipment cover
As a rule of thumb, about 1,6 kilograms of anchor weight per metre of boat length, and a chain diameter of 6 to 12 millimetres depending on the size of the boat.

These rules of thumb apply to a bower anchor in moderate wind and good holding ground. If you regularly anchor in strong winds or over soft ground, go one size up. Modern anchor designs hold considerably better than the old types at the same weight. Chain diameter follows the size of the boat, not the weight of the anchor.
Anchor, chain and equipment are covered under the hull cover, provided they belong to the boat and were declared in the application. If the anchor is lost through an insured event, for example because the chain parts in a storm, that is a claim.
Simply losing loose items, or their going over the side, is not covered. The difference lies in the event: someone who has to slip the anchor because the chain has fouled a rock is in a different position from someone whose spare anchor slides over the side. Recording both in the logbook helps to tell the two apart.
