How the place works
The Tuamotus are a field of seventy-eight atolls whose rings barely rise above the water and which show up late on radar. Passes lead into the lagoons through which the tidal stream runs at up to eight knots, and entry only works around slack water.
What breaks there
Entering against the stream means standing waves in the pass, and a boat that loses control breaks up on the reef edge. Inside the lagoon it is coral heads that snag the anchor chain.
