Buy boat vignettes, tolls and fees from official shops

Taking your boat abroad often means paying before you go: a vignette for the boat on the canals, tourist tax for the crew, a levy to the tax authority and, on the way there, motorway tolls for car and trailer. This page shows, country by country, where to buy each vignette and fee directly from the authority or operator.

Every button leads to the official shop, never to a reseller. We sell nothing ourselves and earn nothing from any click. What the fees actually cover is set out in our overview of waterway vignettes and fees.

Addresses checked on: 8 Nov 2026

Only buy from official shops

Search for a vignette and private resellers often come out on top.

They add mark-ups, sometimes several times the official price.

Check the address in your browser before paying, and use the buttons on this page.

On the water: vignettes and canal tickets

These charges are paid for the boat itself, for canals, harbours or cruising a country's coastal waters.

France

Vignette for the French canals

On the inland waterways run by VNF, boats of 5 m or longer, or with an engine of 9.9 hp (7.29 kW) or more, need a vignette. It covers one day, seven days, 30 days or a year and is bought online; the shop shows the current price.

On the road: vignettes for car and trailer

Towing to your cruising ground: these countries require a motorway vignette. Elsewhere you pay tolls by distance at the booth, so there is nothing to buy in advance.

Austria

Austrian motorway vignette

Only the towing vehicle up to 3.5 t needs the vignette, the boat trailer does not. Bought online, the 1-day and 10-day vignettes can start at once, while the 2-month and annual vignettes only become valid from the 18th day after purchase because of consumer law. If you leave soon, buy early or at a sales point.

Switzerland

In Switzerland the trailer needs a vignette too. It costs CHF 40 and runs from 1 December of the previous year to 31 January of the following year. The e-vignette is tied to a number plate; enter the trailer's plate if it has to be registered separately.

Before you leave

Prices usually change at the turn of the year, and the shops always show the current one. Keep the receipt for any vignette or fee on board or in the car.

Speed limits, distance tolls and bridges along the way are in the boat trailer route planner. Which papers belong on board is in the boat papers checklist.
