Racing and regatta clause, in the boat insurance glossary

Boat insurance term, area: Exclusions

Many boat policies exclude damage during races or deal with it separately. They usually distinguish sailing regattas, sometimes club races from open competitions, from powerboat or jet ski races, which are treated as a much higher risk. Practice runs before an event normally fall under the same clause. If two dinghies collide at the windward mark of a club race, whether the hull cover pays depends entirely on how this clause is worded.

What to check: Are regattas excluded, limited to club events or included? Are powerboat or jet ski races and their practice runs covered only by separate agreement, and does the liability cover follow the same rule?
