Caribbean: hurricane season: how the place works

The season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and the severe systems come in August and September. A storm works its way up the island arc within days, and useful warning time rarely exceeds forty-eight hours. Getting out of the zone means going far south, to Trinidad or Grenada, or hauling the boat out.

Boats are rarely destroyed by wind alone but by their neighbours: in the mangroves and in the marina one breaks loose and the rest go down like dominoes. Add the storm surge inside the basin, which lifts boats over the pontoon and sets them down where no crane can reach.
