In short
If your car is stolen in Germany, partial cover (Teilkasko) pays the replacement value, meaning the price of an equivalent used car, minus your deductible. What does insurance pay and when? Only once the car has not turned up within one month of reporting it. In 2024 the average was about EUR 20,700 per stolen car. With liability only you get nothing.
Published figures from the German insurance industry on stolen cars with partial or comprehensive cover, and information on new price compensation.
| Example | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Average theft claim per car, 2024 | about EUR 20,700 |
| Average theft claim per car, 2014 | about EUR 14,500 |
| Stolen cars with partial or comprehensive cover, 2024 | about 14,200 vehicles |
| Expensive sports cars | over EUR 100,000 per theft |
| New price compensation in better policies | usually 6 to 24 months after first registration |
Figures from the 2024 car theft statistics of German motor insurers and from guides, as of October 2026.
The values in the worked example are guide values from our quoting practice.
We can check how long your policy pays the new price and whether it waives the gross negligence defence for theft too.
Worked example
Bought for EUR 38,000, partial cover with a EUR 150 deductible, new price compensation for 24 months only. This is how the claim is settled.
| Purchase price three years ago | EUR 38,000 |
| Replacement value according to the assessor | about EUR 26,000 |
| Partial cover deductible | EUR 150 |
| New price compensation | no longer applies, the car is older than 24 months |
| Payment after the one month period | about EUR 25,850 |
You receive about EUR 25,850, at the earliest one month after reporting. Enough for an equivalent car, not for a new one. Calculated with guide values.
German car insurance has three levels: compulsory liability (Haftpflicht), partial cover (Teilkasko) and comprehensive cover (Vollkasko), which always includes partial cover. Theft of the whole car falls under partial cover. It pays the replacement value (Wiederbeschaffungswert): what a dealer would charge for a car of the same age, similar mileage and equipment. An assessor usually sets the figure, and your deductible is subtracted.
Stolen parts that belong to the car are also paid, such as wheels, a built-in navigation system or the catalytic converter. Personal belongings inside the car are not part of it.
| What happens | Who pays |
|---|---|
| The whole car is stolen | partial cover, replacement value minus deductible |
| Wheels, catalytic converter or built-in navigation stolen | partial cover, minus deductible |
| The car is found damaged | partial cover pays to repair the theft damage |
| Laptop, bag or phone taken from the car | only household contents cover (Hausrat) with an add-on for theft from cars |
| Hire car in the meantime | only with a breakdown cover add-on or policy extra, otherwise you |
| You only have liability cover | nobody, you bear the loss alone |
Under standard German car insurance terms the insurer pays only once the car has not reappeared one month after the claim was reported. If it is found within that time, you must take it back. Partial cover then pays to repair the damage caused by the theft.
If the car turns up after the month, it normally belongs to the insurer and you keep the payment. So do not rush into buying a new car while the month is running. A hire car for this period is not included in many policies.
Better policies pay the new price instead of the replacement value when a young car is stolen, usually for 6 to 24 months after first registration and only if you are the first owner. Some go further. A few offer purchase price compensation for used cars for a limited time after buying.
With a leased or financed car the money goes to the leasing company or the bank. If the amount still owed is higher than the replacement value, a gap remains that only GAP cover closes.
If you make theft easy, the insurer may cut the payment for gross negligence: the key left in the ignition, the spare key in the glove box, the car unlocked, or the registration certificate part II (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil II, the former vehicle title) left in the car. The cut depends on how serious it was. Many policies waive the gross negligence defence but expressly exclude theft from that waiver.
The insurer will ask for all keys. If one is missing without explanation, it checks more closely and often pays later. If a keyless car is stolen with a relay attack, that is a normal theft without fault on your part.
For an older car worth a few thousand euros, little is left after the deductible. Partial cover is then hardly worth it for theft alone.
It is different if you depend on the car and could not replace it from savings. Partial cover also pays for storm, hail, collisions with deer, broken glass and marten bites, which belongs in the sum.
Questions and answers
At the earliest one month after you report it. After that the insurer still needs your documents and usually a valuation.
No. Theft is a partial cover claim, and partial cover has no no-claims class. General premium increases can still happen.
Usually not. A replacement car is only covered through a breakdown cover add-on (Schutzbrief) or a policy extra, and then mostly for a few days.
Then it usually belongs to the insurer and you keep the money. Some insurers offer to give the car back if you repay.
No. If you lock a keyless car normally, you are not negligent, even if thieves extend the radio signal.
The insurer in the country where the car is registered, under that policy's terms. Once you live in Germany you must usually register the car here within a set period and take out German insurance.
Not the car insurance. Household contents cover can pay if it includes theft from cars, often only up to a fixed limit.
