Does comprehensive car insurance pay if your EV battery breaks?
In short
In Germany, comprehensive car insurance does pay if your EV battery breaks because of an accident, fire, short circuit or a marten bite. Fire, short circuit and animal bites fall under partial cover (Teilkasko), an accident you caused only under full cover (Vollkasko). Wear and lost capacity are not insured; the maker's warranty, usually 8 years or 160,000 km, applies.
Published annual premiums for full cover in Germany, average of the five cheapest policies for a 44 year old driver in Münster, 12,000 km a year, no claims class (SF-Klasse) 13, excess EUR 300 full cover and EUR 150 partial cover.
Example
Typical range
VW ID.3
about EUR 270 a year
Fiat 500e
about EUR 296 a year
Hyundai Kona Electric
about EUR 358 a year
Tesla Model 3
about EUR 526 a year
Battery add-on
about EUR 20 to 40 a year extra

Worked example
Marten bite on a high voltage cable, battery needs replacing
A four year old EV with partial cover and EUR 150 excess. A marten bites a high voltage cable, a short circuit follows and the battery is damaged beyond repair.
New high voltage cable
about EUR 800
Diagnosis and new battery
about EUR 12,000
Limit for consequential damage, policy A
EUR 10,000
Limit for consequential damage, policy B
EUR 20,000
With policy A the insurer pays the cable and EUR 10,000 towards the battery, minus the EUR 150 excess, so about EUR 2,150 stays with you. With policy B everything is paid except the excess. Your no claims class is not affected in either case.
Which cause of battery damage needs which cover
German car insurance pays for events, not for parts. For an EV battery, the question is why it breaks. A fire or a short circuit is a partial cover claim. Hitting a kerb and damaging the underbody is a full cover claim.
Because the battery is roughly one third of the value of an electric car, almost all insurers include it in their own damage cover (Kasko). Only a few sell it as a separate add-on. Battery damage easily costs EUR 10,000 to 15,000.

Battery wear is a warranty matter
Losing range as the battery ages is not an accident, so car insurance does not pay for it. Even special battery add-ons usually exclude wear, design faults, chemical reactions and capacity loss over time.
That is what the manufacturer warranty is for. According to an evaluation by the German motoring club ADAC, most makers give 8 years or 160,000 km and usually promise 70 percent usable capacity. If the battery drops below that within the period, you have a warranty claim.
Avoid deep discharge. If you leave the car standing for weeks with an almost empty battery, the battery management system records it, and with some makers this can void the battery warranty.
Limits for consequential damage, diagnosis and disposal
The fine print matters most for EV batteries. If a marten bites a high voltage cable and causes a short circuit, the bite is covered, but the knock on damage to the battery only up to your policy limit. Most policies now pay at least EUR 10,000, where EUR 5,000 used to be common. The German policyholders' association (Bund der Versicherten) recommends at least EUR 20,000 for animal bites and short circuits.
After an accident the battery often has to be checked before anyone knows whether it is still safe to use. Make sure this battery diagnosis is explicitly covered, and that disposal of the battery is paid for after a write off.
Also check whether the insurer replaces the battery at new value or only pays the current value of a used battery. On a three year old EV the difference can be several thousand euros.
When a separate battery add-on makes sense
Some insurers offer an EV battery add-on that covers damage from almost any cause, including operating errors while charging. Published figures put the extra cost at about EUR 20 to 40 a year.
It is mainly worth it for a new, expensive EV with a large battery. It does not replace the warranty: wear and capacity loss are usually excluded there too.
When you do not need extra battery cover
If your full cover already has high limits for animal bites and short circuits, includes battery diagnosis and pays new value, the battery is well protected against accidents and fire. An extra add-on adds little.
For an older EV with a low resale value, partial cover can be enough, as long as it covers short circuits and animal bites with consequential battery damage. Battery damage after an accident you caused is then your own cost.
Step by step
If the high voltage warning comes on, stop safely and do not drive on.
Call breakdown assistance and say it is an electric car so it is towed correctly.
Report the claim to your insurer at once and photograph bite marks, burn marks or the accident scene.
Have the battery checked only by a workshop trained for high voltage systems and keep the diagnosis report.
At the same time ask the manufacturer whether it is a warranty case, for example a cell fault.
Checklist
Short circuits and animal bites with consequential battery damage, ideally up to EUR 20,000
Battery diagnosis after an accident included
Battery disposal covered after a write off
New value rather than current value for the battery
Breakdown cover that tows electric cars
Manufacturer warranty terms on years, mileage and remaining capacity known
Common mistakes
Assuming car insurance pays when the battery gets weaker with age
Choosing on price alone and missing a low limit for consequential damage
Leaving the car for weeks with a nearly empty battery and risking the warranty
Driving on after the underbody has hit an obstacle
Using a towing service without EV experience
Questions and answers
Frequently asked
Does partial cover pay if a short circuit destroys the battery?
Yes, short circuits are part of partial cover (Teilkasko).
How much it pays for the battery depends on the limit for consequential damage, often EUR 10,000,
sometimes EUR 20,000.
Will insurance pay if my battery range drops?
No.
Capacity loss is wear.
The manufacturer warranty applies,
usually 8 years or 160,000 km with about 70 percent capacity remaining.
Is the battery always replaced after an accident?
No.
It is usually tested first, and in many cases swapping individual modules is enough.
Make sure the diagnosis is covered.
Does a marten claim make my premium go up?
No, a partial cover claim does not change your no claims class (SF-Klasse).
You only pay the excess.
Are EVs more expensive to insure in Germany?
According to the German insurance association GDV,
full cover claims on EVs cost 15 to 20 percent more but happen 10 to 15 percent less often than on
