How do I cancel my bike insurance in Germany?

In short

Send a cancellation (Kündigung) in text form, so an email is enough, usually 1 to 3 months before the contract year ends. Some policies can be cancelled daily or monthly. After a claim or a price rise without better cover you may cancel within one month. If you sell the bike, the policy passes to the buyer and you lose the right to cancel.

How do I cancel my bike insurance in Germany?

What it costs

What a policy you cancel or replace costs, and what is left when you cancel mid year, 2026.

ExampleTypical range
Separate bike policy with full cover, cancellable dailyfrom about EUR 5.30 to 8 a month
The same over a full yearfrom about EUR 64 to 96 a year
Annual premium EUR 120, cancelled after a claim after 5 monthsabout EUR 70 refunded pro rata
Legal range for normal notice1 to 3 months before the end of the contract year

Premiums from published tariffs, September 2026. The refund is a worked example; whether and how much is refunded depends on the law and your terms. That many annual policies use three months notice is a guide value from our quoting practice. Your policy schedule and terms are binding.

Worked example

E-bike stolen, insurer has paid, new bike to be insured elsewhere

Annual policy with a EUR 120 premium, starting 1 January, compensation paid on 31 May.

Special cancellation possible untilabout 30 June, one month after payment
Annual premium paidEUR 120
Share for January to MayEUR 50
Possible refundabout EUR 70
New policystarts on the day you collect the new bike

If you cancel within the month and start the new policy without a gap, you pay nothing twice. Many terms end the policy after a theft anyway; the cancellation is then a safeguard, not a duty. Worked example with guide values.

Which way out applies to you

How fast you can leave depends on the reason. Without a special reason the normal cancellation (ordentliche Kündigung) applies at the end of the contract year. A claim or a price rise gives you a special right to cancel (Sonderkündigungsrecht), but only within one month.

If your bike is covered as an add-on in your contents insurance (Hausratversicherung), it is not a separate contract. Whether you can drop just the bike add-on is in your terms, often only at the next main renewal date.

ReasonDeadlineWhen the policy ends
No special reasonusually 1 to 3 months before expiry, as stated in the policyat the end of the contract year
Policy can be cancelled daily or monthlyas stated in the policy, sometimes 1 dayvery soon
After a claimwithin one month after payment or refusalat once or later, at the latest when the current period ends
Price rise without more coverwithin one month after you receive the noticeon the day the rise would take effect
Bike soldyou as seller: no right to cancelthe buyer may cancel within one month
Contract just signed14 days withdrawal (Widerruf) after you receive the documentsbackdated, most of the premium is refunded
Bike stolen and paid for, or destroyeddepending on the terms the policy ends by itselfwhen the bike is gone

Normal cancellation at the end of the year

Most separate bike policies run for one year and renew for another year if nobody cancels. Under the German Insurance Contract Act the notice period must be between one and three months. The exact period and the expiry date are on your policy schedule (Versicherungsschein).

Contracts longer than three years can be cancelled at the end of the third year with three months notice, even if a longer term was agreed. Newer policies can often be cancelled daily or monthly, which is useful if you are not sure how long you will stay in Germany.

Cancelling in English and from abroad

The law asks for text form, not for a particular language. A short letter in German is still the safest choice, because the staff reading it will act faster and there is less room for doubt. Three lines are enough: your policy number (Versicherungsnummer), the wish to cancel (Hiermit kündige ich den Vertrag zum nächstmöglichen Termin) and a request for written confirmation.

Leaving Germany does not end a bike policy by itself. If the bike moves with you, check whether the policy still covers it abroad and for how long. If you give up your German address, cancel in time and ask for confirmation by email, so that no further direct debits reach your German account.

Special cancellation after a claim or price rise

After every claim both sides may cancel, even if the insurer paid. Your month starts when the negotiations end, usually with the payment or refusal. If you wait longer, the right is gone.

If the insurer raises the premium without improving the cover, you may cancel within one month after receiving the notice. If the policy ends in the middle of a period, the insurer only keeps the premium up to that date. The rest is refunded pro rata.

Selling the bike: the policy moves with it

When you sell the insured bike, the policy passes to the buyer by law. You as seller then have no right to cancel. The buyer and the insurer may cancel within one month after the sale. For the premium of the current period you and the buyer are jointly liable.

Tell the insurer about the sale without delay, with the buyer's name and address. If you do not want to pass the policy on, cancel it in time before the sale or tell the buyer openly that it comes with the bike.

When you should not cancel

Do not cancel before the new cover has started. A theft in the gap is not insured. And do not cancel while a claim is still open, you need the contract until it is settled.

If the bike is old and worth little, cancelling is often the right call. The premium of a separate policy no longer matches what you could get back, and for an everyday bike the bike add-on of a contents policy is usually enough.

Step by step

  1. Find your policy schedule and note the policy number, expiry date and notice period.
  2. Decide on the reason: normal, after a claim, after a price rise or because of a sale.
  3. Arrange new cover so it starts before the old one ends.
  4. Send the cancellation in text form, ideally in German, with policy number, date and a request for confirmation.
  5. File the confirmation and check the last direct debit on your account.

Checklist

  • Policy number and name of the policyholder included
  • Desired end date or next possible date stated
  • Reason given for a special cancellation: claim or price rise
  • Deadline met, date of sending documented
  • New policy starts before the old one ends
  • Written confirmation received

Common mistakes

  • Cancelling the old policy before the new one starts
  • Letting the one month after a claim pass
  • Assuming the policy ends by itself when you sell the bike or leave Germany
  • Cancelling the whole contents insurance when you only wanted to drop the bike add-on
  • Not asking for confirmation and finding more direct debits later

Questions and answers

Frequently asked

Can I cancel my bike insurance by email?

Yes, text form is enough. If you signed up online, the insurer has to offer a cancel button on its website.

Can I write the cancellation in English?

The law does not prescribe a language, but a short letter in German avoids delays and questions. Always include your policy number.

Which notice period applies?

The one in your contract, usually 1 to 3 months before the end of the contract year. Some policies can be cancelled daily or monthly.

May I cancel after a theft?

What happens when I sell my bike?

Can I withdraw from a policy I just signed?

Yes, within 14 days after you receive the documents, without giving a reason.
