What should I do if my bike is stolen in Germany?

In short

File a police report (Anzeige) the same day, within 48 hours at the latest, and notify your insurer without delay. Have the purchase receipt, the frame number (Rahmennummer), the case number of the police report (Aktenzeichen) and the lock with all its keys ready. Payment usually follows only once the bike has not turned up within three weeks.

What should I do if my bike is stolen in Germany?

What it costs

Figures around bike theft in Germany: caps, payouts and what prevention costs.

ExampleTypical range
Average payout per insured theft in 2025EUR 1,270, around EUR 150 million in total for 115,000 bikes
Cap without the bike add-on on a sum insured of EUR 52,000about EUR 520 to 1,040, so 1 to 2 percent
Extra premium for the bike add-on in contents insuranceabout EUR 20 to 60 a year for a bike worth EUR 1,000 to 3,000
Standalone bike policy for a bike up to EUR 2,000from about EUR 60 a year
Coding the bike (Codierung)about EUR 15 to 20, often EUR 5 to 10 for members of a cycling association
A good lock from the testabout EUR 58 to 200

As of September 2026, figures from the sources listed below. The extra premium of EUR 20 to 60 for the bike add-on is a guide value from our quoting practice, as is the processing time of two to six weeks. Your own caps and deadlines are in your policy; we read them with you.

Worked example

E-bike worth EUR 2,800, stolen at the station

The bike was locked to a rack with a U-lock at 18:00. The contents policy has a bike add-on up to EUR 3,000 and a deductible of EUR 150.

Purchase price two years agoEUR 2,800
Payout at the new price of an equivalent bikeEUR 2,800
Less the deductibleEUR 150
New lock, not coveredabout EUR 58 to 200
Time until paymentthree weeks of waiting, then two to six weeks of processing

EUR 2,650 is paid out. Without the bike add-on the same policy with a sum insured of EUR 45,000 would have paid nothing at all for a theft outdoors, and only EUR 450 to 900 for a burglary into the cellar.

The first hours after the theft

The order matters: first the police report, then the notification to your insurer. The report is your proof that the bike is really gone, and almost every set of policy terms requires it. Report the theft the same day, within 48 hours at the latest.

Every police station takes the report, and in many federal states you can file it online through the Internetwache. Write down the case number (Aktenzeichen). Without that number no insurer will process your claim.

StepDeadlineWhat you need for it
File the police reportsame day, 48 hours at the latestframe number, receipt, place and time
Notify the insurerwithout delay, often one weekcase number, value of the bike, policy number
Hand in the list of stolen itemsafter a burglary usually within one weekevery missing item with its value
Send in the lock and the keyswhen the insurer asks for themall original keys, receipt for the lock
Payment after an unsuccessful searchas a rule after three weeksno further documents

Which documents decide the claim

Nothing works without the frame number (Rahmennummer). It is usually stamped under the bottom bracket, on the seat tube or behind the saddle. Photograph it while you still have the bike and keep the receipt or invoice with it.

The lock and its keys matter just as much. Insurers ask for every original key and often for the receipt for the lock, because that is how they check whether the bike was locked to something fixed and whether the lock met the requirements. A coding (Codierung), a bike passport (Fahrradpass) or the last position of a GPS tracker help on top of that, but they do not replace the receipt.

What contents insurance pays and what it does not

Without the bike add-on (Fahrradbaustein) your bike is only insured against burglary from your flat, a locked cellar or a garage, and usually only up to 1 to 2 percent of the sum insured. On a sum insured of EUR 52,000 that is roughly EUR 520 to 1,040, no matter what the bike cost.

With the bike add-on, contents insurance (Hausratversicherung) also pays for simple theft outdoors, but only under conditions. The bike has to be locked with a normal, sound lock to a fixed object, not merely locked in itself. Older and cheap tariffs also contain a night-time clause (Nachtzeitklausel): between 22:00 and 06:00 there is no cover outdoors unless the bike was in use.

Replacement value, cap and deductible

Contents insurance in Germany normally pays the cost of buying a bike of the same kind and quality new (Neuwert). Standalone bike policies often work differently: after three to five years many of them pay only a share of the original price or the market value of a used bike.

Your deductible (Selbstbeteiligung) is taken off the payout, usually EUR 150 to 300 in contents insurance and EUR 0 to 150 in bike policies. Above all of that sits the agreed cap. That is the figure you want to know before anything happens, not after.

Why claims get refused or cut

Most refusals are not bad faith, they are missing evidence: no police report or one filed too late, no receipt, an unknown frame number, a lock and keys that were thrown away. In all of these cases the burden of proof is on you, not on the insurer.

Then come the hard requirements in the terms: the bike locked in itself instead of locked to something fixed, a theft at night despite a night-time clause, a key left in the lock, a bike left in the same spot for weeks. If you make the story look better than it was on the claim form, you risk more than a cut: false statements can cost you the whole payout.

How long it takes and when reporting is not worth it

Expect three weeks of waiting, because only after that is it treated as settled that the bike will not turn up. Processing afterwards usually takes two to six weeks. Follow-up questions about documents drag it out, so send everything in one go.

Not every claim is worth filing. On a bike worth EUR 300 with a deductible of EUR 150 you are left with EUR 150, and your policy carries a claim: after a loss both sides are allowed to cancel the contract, and the next insurer will ask about previous claims. The police report is always worth it though. It costs nothing and it is your proof of ownership if the bike is found.

Step by step

  1. File the police report at once, at a station or through the online Internetwache, and note the case number.
  2. Collect the frame number, the receipt, photos and any proof of coding.
  3. Notify your insurer with the case number, the place, the time, the value and how the bike was secured.
  4. Keep the lock, the receipt for the lock and every original key, and send them in on request.
  5. Watch second-hand marketplaces and report any find to the police only, never collect the bike yourself.
  6. Follow up after the three week deadline if you hear nothing about the payment.

Checklist

  • Police report filed, case number written down
  • Frame number and purchase receipt available
  • Lock, receipt for the lock and all keys kept
  • Place, time and type of lock noted in writing
  • Coding or bike passport as proof of ownership
  • Bike cap and any night-time clause looked up in your policy

Common mistakes

  • Filing the police report days or weeks later and missing the deadline in your terms
  • Throwing away the lock and its keys because the bike is gone anyway
  • Not knowing the frame number, which makes the police search pointless
  • Assuming your German contents insurance covers the bike anywhere, without the add-on
  • Keeping a bike that turns up later without paying the money back

Questions and answers

Frequently asked

How long do I have to file the police report?

There is no statutory deadline, but policy terms require you to act without delay. Report it the same day, within 48 hours at the latest.

Will the insurer pay without a police report?

As a rule no. The case number is the proof that the theft happened, and without it claims are usually refused.

Can I file the police report in English?

Many stations will help you in English, and some federal states offer online forms in English. The file itself is written in German, so ask for a copy with the case number.

What if I no longer have the receipt?

The claim still stands, but you have to prove value and ownership another way: photos, a bank statement, the coding or a confirmation from the shop. Without a receipt insurers usually estimate low.

How long does processing take?

Usually three weeks of waiting for the police search and then two to six weeks until payment. Complete documents shorten it noticeably.

What happens if my bike turns up later?

Tell your insurer in writing. You can either pay the money back and keep the bike or hand the bike over to the insurer.

Is it worth claiming for a cheap bike?

Often not. If the value is barely above your deductible little is left and your policy carries a claim. Still file the police report.
