How do I insure a cargo bike in Germany?

In short

An electric cargo bike worth EUR 5,000 is covered against theft, accidents and battery damage by a separate bike policy from about EUR 55 to 155 a year. Contents insurance rarely covers enough, because its bike limit is often only 1 to 3 percent of the sum insured. If you carry children, also check your liability and accident cover.

Worked example

Family with an e-cargo bike worth EUR 5,500, two children, parked in the courtyard

The bike does not fit into the cellar and stands locked under a carport. The contents sum insured is EUR 55,000.

Contents insurance with a 1 percent bike limitat most EUR 550 after a theft
Own cargo bike policy with battery and accessoriesabout EUR 60 to 160 a year
Personal liability, usually already in placeno extra charge for a pedelec up to 25 km/h
Child accident insurance for two childrenguide value about EUR 80 to 150 a year

For about EUR 60 to 160 a year the bike is fully covered, while contents insurance alone would replace only a tenth. Worked example with guide values.

Three questions every cargo bike raises

A cargo bike carries more risk than a normal bike. It is expensive and large, often stands outside because it does not fit into the cellar, and frequently carries children. So there are three questions: who pays if the bike is stolen or damaged, who pays if you harm someone else, and what applies if your child gets hurt.

The bike itself is covered by bike insurance, damage to others by your personal liability insurance (Privathaftpflicht) and your own injuries by accident insurance (Unfallversicherung). The table shows which solution covers what.

RiskWho paysNote
Theft from a locked roomcontents insurance or bike policycontents only up to the bike limit
Theft on the streetbike add-on of contents insurance or bike policyfollow the lock rules, often locked to a fixed object
Fall, vandalism, battery damageonly a separate bike policycontents insurance does not pay
Damage to others, such as a carpersonal liability insuranceusually included for pedelecs up to 25 km/h
Injury to your own childaccident insurance, partly statutory cover on the way to nurseryliability usually does not pay within the family
S-pedelec up to 45 km/hmotor liability with an insurance platemandatory, no riding without the plate

Why contents insurance is rarely enough

Contents insurance replaces a stolen bike only up to a limit linked to the sum insured. With a EUR 50,000 sum and a 1 percent limit that is EUR 500, a tenth of a EUR 5,000 e-cargo bike.

It also pays nothing for a fall, vandalism or a broken battery, and a cargo bike battery often costs EUR 600 to 1,000. For a cheap cargo bike without a motor, kept in a locked garage, a raised bike limit in your contents policy can still be enough.

What newcomers should check first

Personal liability insurance is not compulsory in Germany, but most residents have it and it is what pays if your cargo bike damages a car or injures a pedestrian. If you have just arrived and have no policy yet, arrange that first. It is cheap compared with the bike policy.

Most bike policies require a German address and ask for the purchase invoice and frame number. A bike bought abroad can usually be insured too, as long as you have the invoice. Keep a copy in your email, since the invoice is the key document after a theft.

Children in the cargo bike

If you cause an accident, your personal liability insurance pays the damage of others. Many policies exclude claims within your own family, so if your own child gets hurt, liability usually does not help.

On the direct way to nursery (Kita) or school, children are covered by statutory accident insurance, not on trips and in their free time. Private child accident insurance closes that gap. For the bike policy, make sure child seats, belts and rain cover are included in the sum insured.

Special cases: S-pedelec and business use

If the motor assists beyond 25 km/h, the cargo bike counts as a small motor vehicle. You then need an insurance plate (Versicherungskennzeichen) with motor liability, and personal liability no longer pays. Cover for the bike itself is optional.

If you use the cargo bike for deliveries, a trade or a shop, many private policies no longer apply. There are separate policies for business bikes, but carrying people for money is often excluded. Liability is then a matter for business liability insurance.

When you do not need a separate policy

A used cargo bike without a motor worth a few hundred euros, kept in a locked room at night, is covered well enough by contents insurance with a bike add-on. A full bike policy costs too much in relation.

Bikes leased through your employer are often insured already. Check the leasing contract before you pay twice.

Step by step

  1. Check whether your cargo bike assists up to 25 km/h or is an S-pedelec.
  2. Add up the purchase price including child seats, box and rain cover.
  3. Work out the bike limit of your contents insurance and compare it with the price.
  4. Choose a policy that pays for battery, falls and theft around the clock.
  5. Read the lock rules and check whether your parking spot meets them.
  6. Check personal liability and accident cover for the children.

Checklist

  • Sum insured covers price and accessories
  • Battery and motor explicitly included
  • Theft covered outside and at night
  • Personal liability includes pedelecs
  • Business use allowed if you ride the bike for work
  • Invoice, frame number and photos stored safely

Common mistakes

  • Relying on contents insurance although its bike limit covers only a fraction
  • Leaving child seats and rain cover out of the sum insured
  • Using the bike for work although the policy only allows private rides
  • Riding an S-pedelec without an insurance plate

Questions and answers

Frequently asked

Is insurance mandatory for a cargo bike?

No, as long as the motor only assists up to 25 km/h. An S-pedelec up to 45 km/h needs an insurance plate.

Does my personal liability insurance cover accidents with the cargo bike?

For cargo bikes without a motor and pedelecs up to 25 km/h, usually yes. Many policies exclude damage within your own family.

Does the bike have to be locked to a fixed object?

Many policies require that when the bike stands outside. Read the lock rules, otherwise you may get nothing after a theft.

Is the battery covered?

In separate bike policies usually yes, also for moisture or electronic faults. Contents insurance only pays if the battery is stolen.

Can I insure a cargo bike I brought from abroad?

Usually yes, with the purchase invoice and frame number. Some policies only accept bikes up to a certain age at the start.

What does cargo bike insurance cost per month?

For an e-cargo bike around EUR 5,000 about EUR 4.50 to 13, often a little less if you pay yearly.

Are leased or rented cargo bikes insured?

Leased bikes usually come with insurance in the contract. For rental bikes the rental company sets the rules, often with a high deductible for you.
