Is hospital daily allowance in accident insurance worth it?

In short

For most people a hospital daily allowance in accident insurance is not worth it. It only pays after an accident, not when you are ill, and a hospital stay in Germany lasts 7.1 days on average. At EUR 20 a day that is about EUR 140. The same premium does far more as a higher sum insured or as sickness daily benefit.

Worked example

Ten years of premium against one accident with a hospital stay

A woman aged 40 adds EUR 20 accident hospital daily allowance. Over ten years she has one accident with a week in hospital.

Extra premium for the allowance, ten yearsabout EUR 100 to 300
Payout for 7 days in hospitalEUR 140
Statutory co-payment for the same 7 daysEUR 70
Alternative: EUR 20,000 more sum insured, payout at 20 percent disabilityEUR 4,000 more

The allowance covers the co-payment and some side costs, but in many cases does not earn back the premium. The same money protects you far better against permanent harm.

What the add-on does

The hospital daily allowance (Krankenhaustagegeld) in German accident insurance pays an agreed amount for every day you spend in hospital as an inpatient after an accident. EUR 10 to 50 a day is common. The money is yours to use as you like; you do not have to prove any costs.

It is often combined with a recovery allowance (Genesungsgeld) paid after discharge, either for a number of days or as a lump sum. Only some policies pay for outpatient surgery, and then usually for a few days.

The honest calculation

A hospital stay in Germany lasts 7.1 days on average. At EUR 20 a day an accident with an inpatient stay brings about EUR 140, at EUR 50 about EUR 355. Nice to have, but it does not change your financial position after an accident.

Against that stands a premium you pay every year, including all the years without an accident. And the add-on only pays when an accident is the cause. Most hospital stays are due to illness, and then accident insurance pays nothing.

Daily allowance7 days in hospital14 days in hospital28 days in hospital
EUR 10EUR 70EUR 140EUR 280
EUR 20EUR 140EUR 280EUR 560
EUR 30EUR 210EUR 420EUR 840
EUR 50EUR 350EUR 700EUR 1,400

What it cannot do

A hospital allowance does not replace income. Employees in Germany get six weeks of continued pay from the employer and then sickness benefit (Krankengeld) from the health insurer. If you are self-employed, you need real sickness daily benefit (Krankentagegeld) that pays for illness and accidents and is based on your income.

Nor does it improve your treatment. Chief physician care and a two bed room come from supplementary hospital insurance (Krankenhauszusatzversicherung), not from a daily allowance in accident insurance.

When it may still fit

If the add-on costs only a few euros a year, it covers the side costs of a hospital stay: the statutory co-payment of EUR 10 a day, travel for your family, phone and TV, childcare at home. For children, who are often accompanied by a parent in hospital, that helps.

People with risky hobbies such as motorcycling, riding or climbing end up in hospital after accidents more often. Then the add-on is more likely to pay off. Just keep the order right: first the sum insured and the limb schedule (Gliedertaxe), then add-ons like this one.

A better use for the same premium

Put the extra premium into a higher sum insured and you protect the case that really gets expensive: permanent disability. Just EUR 20,000 more sum insured brings EUR 4,000 more at 20 percent disability, paid once.

If you want more comfort in hospital, supplementary hospital insurance serves you better; if you want to protect your income, sickness daily benefit does. Both also pay when you are ill.

Step by step

  1. Check that the sum insured and the limb schedule are right before thinking about add-ons.
  2. Ask for the extra premium for the allowance to be shown separately in the quote.
  3. Work out how many hospital days you would need to earn the premium back.
  4. Consider whether sickness daily benefit or supplementary hospital insurance meets your goal better.
  5. For children or risky hobbies, consider the add-on as a small extra.

Checklist

  • Sum insured set by age and income before any add-ons
  • Extra premium for the hospital allowance known and low
  • Clear whether outpatient surgery and rehab count
  • Maximum payment period checked in the terms
  • Income protected through continued pay, Krankengeld or Krankentagegeld

Common mistakes

  • Believing the hospital allowance also pays for illness
  • Choosing a low sum insured and adding hospital and recovery allowances instead
  • Seeing the allowance as a replacement for lost income
  • Confusing the allowance with supplementary hospital insurance for chief physician and two bed room

Questions and answers

Frequently asked

Does the accident hospital allowance pay for illness?

No. It only pays if an accident caused the hospital stay. For illness you need separate hospital daily benefit insurance.

How high should the allowance be?

If you take it, EUR 10 to 20 a day is usually enough. That covers the statutory co-payment and small side costs.

Does it pay for outpatient surgery?

Only in some policies, and then usually for a few days. Check the terms if it matters to you.

Is the hospital allowance taxable?

From a privately paid accident policy usually not. It counts as compensation, not as income.

What is a recovery allowance?

An amount paid after discharge, depending on the policy for a number of days or once. It shares the weakness of the hospital allowance because it also only pays after accidents.

Who is it most worth it for?

Children, people with risky hobbies and anyone who gets it for very few euros once the sum insured and limb schedule are right.
