Is my bike covered by my German contents insurance?

In short
Is the battery covered by e-bike insurance? Usually yes: a dedicated e-bike policy with comprehensive cover normally pays for theft, falls, water and electronic faults. Wear is often only covered once capacity stays below 50 or 60 percent. Contents insurance (Hausratversicherung) mostly pays for the battery only if the whole bike goes. A new battery costs about EUR 600 to 1,000.

Whether wear and theft of parts are covered for the battery is set out only in your terms; we obtain the right quote for you.
Worked example
The bike was locked to a bike stand with a D-lock, and the battery was forced out of its mount. A replacement costs EUR 750.
| New battery | EUR 750 |
| Contents insurance with bike add-on, no theft of parts | EUR 0 |
| E-bike policy with theft of parts | EUR 750 |
| Deductible in the tariff | EUR 100 |
| Payout from the e-bike policy | EUR 650 |
Contents insurance pays nothing, with an e-bike policy you carry EUR 100 yourself. Worked example with guide values.
There are four kinds of battery damage: theft, damage from a fall or accident, water or electronic faults, and the slow loss of capacity. A dedicated e-bike policy with comprehensive cover (Vollkasko) normally pays for the first three. For the fourth, tariffs differ a lot.
German contents insurance works differently. It protects your belongings against burglary, fire and burst pipes. With the bike add-on, it also pays when the bike is stolen outside. A battery that cracks in a fall or fails after riding in the rain is not something it pays for.
| Battery damage | Contents insurance with bike add-on | E-bike policy with comprehensive cover |
|---|---|---|
| Whole bike stolen including battery | yes, up to the agreed limit | yes, usually up to the new price |
| Only the battery taken from a parked bike | often no | usually yes, if the bike was locked |
| Battery stolen from your locked flat | yes, as burglary | depends on the tariff |
| Battery broken in a fall | no | yes |
| Moisture or short circuit | no | usually yes |
| Capacity lower after some years | no | only in some tariffs, with a threshold |
Every lithium battery loses capacity over time. Many tariffs treat that as normal wear and do not pay. Tariffs that do cover wear usually require capacity to stay below a fixed value, typically 50 or 60 percent, proven by a readout report from a bike workshop.
Some policies also set age limits, for example only for bikes up to a certain age, or only if you took out the policy soon after buying the bike. Read this part of the terms carefully, as it can be worth several hundred euros.
Removable batteries are light and expensive, which makes them a common target. Whether a policy pays is found under theft of parts (Teilediebstahl). The bike usually has to be locked to a fixed object, and some tariffs also require the battery lock to be closed.
A battery you take into your flat is covered there by contents insurance against burglary. In a backpack or a car, the rules for cover outside the home or the e-bike policy apply. The German wording of your terms is what counts in a claim.
To be honest: if the bike is older than five or six years and the battery is due for replacement anyway, an expensive comprehensive policy rarely pays off. Defects in the first two years are the dealer's responsibility under the statutory warranty, and you do not need insurance for that.
If you only park and charge the bike in a locked cellar, contents insurance often covers theft well enough. For new bikes from about EUR 2,000 that stand outside every day, an e-bike policy covering the battery and theft of parts usually makes sense.
Questions and answers
From your locked flat yes, as burglary. If only the battery is taken from a parked bike, contents insurance usually does not pay, even with the bike add-on.
In tariffs with wear cover, usually once capacity stays below 50 or 60 percent. Many tariffs exclude wear entirely.
Only if it is part of the sum insured or named as an accessory. Declare it with the receipt.
Contents insurance pays for damage to your belongings as fire damage, buildings insurance for the building. Whether the battery itself is replaced depends on the e-bike policy.
Usually EUR 600 to 1,000, depending on brand and capacity.
Battery-only policies are rare. An e-bike policy that covers the battery, theft of parts and falls together is the better choice.
